William J. Hammen, age 89, passed away in Jackson Township on January 28, 2015. He was born in Canton, Ohio, on June 25, 1925, to Norman and Mary (Hitz) Hammen. He attended St. Paul’s Elementary School in North Canton and received his First Communion at St. Paul’s Catholic Church. Later Bill and Bette became members of Zion UCC. Bill graduated from Jackson High School in 1942 and played varsity baseball. He then joined the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of World War II and subsequently called up for service in the Korean War. Bill was a certified FAA Airplane and Power Plant Mechanic and a licensed private pilot. He managed the 76 Union Service Station in Lake Cable for many years and worked as a courier for DNR until 2005. In recognition of his years playing competitive Bridge, Bill was awarded a certificate as a Lifetime Master Bridge Player.
He is survived by his wife, Bette (Bierie) Hammen, whom he married on December, 19, 1950. Preceding Bill in death is his sister, Mary Huffman. Special thanks to guardian and caregiver, Chuck Osborne.
Friends and family may call from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday, January 31, 2015, at Karlo-Libby Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Eli Klingensmith conducting the service. Burial will be in Sunset Hills Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Zion United Church of Christ, 415 N.
