

She was preceded in death by her parents Joe and Mary Ann Morris Kirkland, her sister JoAnn and her husband R. E. Whittenberg, brother Kellis Gene and his wife JoAnne Kirkland, brother Foy Wayne and his wife Barbara Kirkland, and brother Ernest “Don” Kirkland.
Betty is survived by her daughter Zetta and husband John R. Hackleman and granddaughter Audra L. Hackleman, daughter Joetta and husband Gregg Freeby and granddaughter Claire E. Freeby, and son Kelvin G. and wife Kelli Smith. Betty is survived by her sister Cora and husband Sam Loper, her brother Robert and wife Peggy Kirkland, and her sister in law Cheri Kirkland. She also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Betty graduated from Athens High School. She was very proud that she graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with her Bachelor of Science of Nursing at the age of 44. She had a fulfilling career as a cardiac nurse at Seton Medical Center.
Family was everything to Betty, and she loved each and every family member for who they were. Each one was a dear gift that brought her joy. Betty cheered with each person’s successes.
Betty loved to travel and see the world whether with family and/or travel buddies. She enjoyed seeing new places, new cultures, and meeting new people. Betty walked on the Great Wall of China and went boating over the Great Barrier Reef of Australia. In Grand Cayman, Betty kissed a sting ray, and went diving in a submarine. Betty also traveled all over the United States from Alaska and Hawaii to the East Coast. She loved to share her beautiful memories with others and encouraged everyone to travel.
A carryover from her childhood was Betty’s love of the land and gardening. She enjoyed having her hands in the soil and planting flowers. Her roses and crepe myrtles are a testament to her talent and dedication to her gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to one of the following charities or organizations she supported: Austin Pets Alive, the American Heart Association, Salvation Army, China Grove Baptist Church or the Morris Cemetery.
