Birdie L. Smith

Birdie passed away on January 23, 2020 in Athens, TX. She was born on June 9, 1927 in Dallas to James Shelton Gibbs and Bama Lucille May Gibbs.

Birdie grew up and graduated high school in Dallas, TX. She worked for Texas Instruments and retired after 38 years. She then worked for Walmart in the shoe department for 10 years. Birdie's favorite pastime was working in her yard and gardening. She liked sewing, was extremely talented in needlepoint crafting, and enjoyed decorating (especially for holidays). Birdie loved music, dancing, and family gatherings. She thoroughly delighted in feeding everyone, including sneaking treats to family pets. Birdie welcomed all with open arms and an open heart; her family and friends were loved unconditionally. Birdie was deeply adored and will be greatly missed by all.

Birdie is survived by her children: Linda Smith Jones; Ronald Jones; Vicki Corey Smith. Grandchildren: Barbara Reed Cravey and Darrell Cravey; Karen Reed; Jason Jones and wife, Lori; Shelly Smith Chambless; Jessica Jones Milligan and husband, Dan. Great-Grandchildren: Tenisha Reed Greunke and husband, Jared; Shae Akins Petrusky and husband, Stan; Tiffani Reed Reese and husband, Conrad; Brittany Akins and Cole Holcomb; Meagan Chambless and Victor Quezada; Gage Milligan; Isabel and Sophia Jones. Great-Great-Grandchildren: Eliot, Emerson, and Francis Reese; Cayson Handlin; Ayden Holcomb; Lillian Petrusky. Nieces: Sharon Hendrix Cox and husband, Tim. Jan Shelton Wyly; Great-Nephews and Nieces: John Norrell; Beau Cox and wife, Andrea; Shannon Wyly Carlson and husband, Rick; Stacy Wyly and husband, Jahvin Carlough. Great-Great-Nephews and Nieces: Sarah, Emilie, and Ella Norrell; Gabriel and Isaac Cox; Annika and Eliana Carlson; Amelia Wyly Carlough. Many cousins, especially Jean Tullos, whom she considered a sister.

She is preceded in death by parents: James Shelton and Bama Lucille Gibbs. Children: Tommy Lee Reed; Fred Shelton Smith. Siblings: Ernest Lucille Gibbs Shelton; Mary Evelyne Gibbs Hendrix and husband, Eugene "Pete" Hendrix. Grandson: Tommy Reed Jr.
