Brenda Maxene Stewart, 76, of Canton, Texas, will be laid to rest on December 19, 2025, with a visitation from 8:00am-9:30am at Eubank Funeral Home in Canton. Following the visitation, she will be buried alongside her loving husband, Bruce Allen Stewart, at the DFW National Cemetery in Dallas.
Brenda was born on August 20, 1949, in Commerce, Texas, to Johnny William and Hazel Lee Williams Davis. One of seven children, Brenda faced tremendous loss early in life when her mother passed away while she was still very young. She and her siblings were welcomed into Boles Home, an orphanage in Quinlan, Texas, where Brenda later recalled feeling safe, supported, and deeply loved. At Boles Home she attended the Church of Christ, formed lifelong friendships, and enjoyed opportunities she cherished for the rest of her life—including touring much of the United States and even Europe. She went on to attend Harding University, graduating with a degree in Communications.
Brenda married the love of her life, Bruce Allen Stewart, in 1978. They were devoted partners for 46 years until Bruce’s passing on December 7, 2024. Together they raised three children in The Colony, Texas where she began a long and meaningful career as a Speech, Communications, Theater, and Debate teacher at The Colony High School.
Brenda was known by her students and colleagues as a kind, funny, and practical educator who made every young person in her classroom feel valued and safe. Former students often shared that she was their favorite teacher who brought warmth, encouragement, and gentle guidance into their lives. Her nurturing spirit extended far beyond her teaching career. Brenda was also known for her cooking and hosting abilities. Family members enjoyed many of her delicious meals, noting her fried chicken and chicken spaghetti as some of their favorites. She served each meal with love and a glass of iced tea.
After retiring, Brenda and Bruce moved to Canton, Texas where they spent more than a decade enjoying peaceful days, each other’s company, and their family and friends.
She is survived by her three daughters: Sundey McClendon and husband Michael, Molly Stewart and husband Elias Medina, and Kelly Cohen; her precious grandchildren Anderson, Hayden, Harper, Micaela, Camden, and Cruz; her brother Larry Davis and wife Sandra, brother-in-law Billy Smith and spouse Judy Whitton, brother-in-law Keith Stewart and wife Paula, sister-in-law Sondra Martinez and husband Jake, and sister-in-law Janis Stewart.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Bruce; her parents Johnny William and Hazel Lee Williams Davis; stepmother Ruby Davis; siblings Betty Joyce Davis, Dorothy Jean Buxton, Rose Marie Goodman, Marcus Lee Davis, Jerald Dee Davis, and Joan Nell Smith; as well as her mother-in-law Edith Mae Stewart and brother-in-law Finley Vance Stewart.
Brenda’s legacy is one of gentleness, strength, and love. She will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to know her.
