Devon Carter

Born on December 13, 1940, in Canton, Texas to his parents Truman and Doris Clever Corley Carter, he had seven siblings and, in 1960, graduated from Canton High School. In 1966, he married Edna Gayle Nichols and they had two sons, Devon “Dee” Carter Jr and Scott Carter. Though their marriage ended, they continued to respect each other and loved their children. For the last 30 years, his son, Dee, became his primary caregiver and the two resided in Plano, Texas.

Devon served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, enlisting in 1963. After his honorable discharge, he built a successful career with Braniff Airlines and later spent many years selling mobile homes throughout the South for several companies, including Centurion International, Inc. During that time, he was recognized as Salesman of the Month on multiple occasions. Above all, however, Devon’s greatest passion was serving the Lord at Prestonwood Baptist Church.

A defining moment came in 1979 after Devon was involved in terrible car accident. A drunk driver t-boned his car one night on a country road. In all accounts, Devon should not have survived as it basically broke every bone on the left side of his body. BUT GOD had other plans and worked miracles in his life. Afterward, Devon’s health changed, struggling with pain and balance issues the rest of his life, but also his love, faith and dedication to his Savior, Jesus Christ became a priority. Devon joined Prestonwood Baptist Church in 1994 and served as an usher/greeter every Sunday, Gift of Christmas performance, graduation, etc. for many years with many wonderful friends. A people-person at heart, Devon never met a stranger and had a smile and an encouraging word for anyone he was around.

A die-hard University of Texas Longhorn, Dallas Cowboys and Texas Ranger fan, Devon could always be counted on for a lively conversation about his favorite teams with anyone willing to talk sports. He and his son, Dee, had season tickets to the Texas Longhorn football games for years. They enjoyed going to games and the camaraderie with other fans that sat in their section.

Devon is survived by his two sons, Dee and Danielle Carter of Plano, and Scott Carter of Austin; sister: Sandra Ivey of Mount Vernon; two brothers: Kenneth and Mary Carter of Ovilla, and Cois and Judi Carter of Grand Saline; and a host of friends.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2026 at 3pm at Eubank Funeral Home in Canton. His family is grateful for the kindness and support shown during this time and their appreciation for the care given to Devon over the last few months by the staff of the Prestonwood Court in Plano, Texas and Visiting Nurse Association Hospice.
