He was born on July 8, 1943 to Fred Whatley and Madgielean Emerson. Raised in the Jackson community, he graduated from Canton High School. Don attended East Texas State University, now known as Texas A&M Commerce, where he obtained his Bachelor's degree in Ag Science.
Don started his career in the Grand Saline Public Schools in 1970. After teaching science for about a year, he was asked if he would coach football for the middle school, and of course, he agreed. He enjoyed helping kids discover the value of hard work, perseverance, teamwork, respect, and caring for each other. He loved seeing his students and athletes discover their full potential.
His love of sports didn’t stop at coaching; Don played baseball at a semi-pro level as a third baseman.
While he loved sports, teaching and coaching, his love of God preceded them. He was a member of Whitton Church of Christ in Canton, Texas. When Don wasn't teaching, he was preaching part-time at small country churches that couldn’t afford a full-time preacher. He was proud of his role in the founding of Fruitvale Church of Christ.
Don was perpetually active, and his stamina and work ethic were legendary. Don’s hobbies included gardening, cutting wood, hauling hay, admiring nature, reading the Bible, watching every sport imaginable, and helping his neighbors.
Don is preceded in death by his parents Fred and Madgielean Whatley.
He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce Whatley; Son: Morgan and wife, Melanie, Whatley; Grandchildren: Jack, Caroline, and Flora Whatley; Sister: Jeffie Phillips; and Nephews: Michael and Steve Phillips.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 am Saturday, February 14, 2026 at the Edgewood Church of Christ.
Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers during this time.
