Frances Virginia Newsom

Frances Virginia Hughes Newsom, age 78, passed away on August 14, 2026. Frances was a gentle and tender-hearted woman who loved Jesus deeply and loved her family with her whole heart. She leaves behind a family who will miss her sweet spirit, and the love she gave so naturally.

Frances was born in Hearne, Texas, to Rosie Virginia Ferguson Hughes and Rex Lincoln Hughes and grew up in Franklin, Texas. In June 1966, she married Zane Rex Newsom, and the two began their life together in Dallas, where they raised their family and shared sixty years of life together.

Frances was the loving mother of Ginger Bass and her husband, Randy, and Sandra Stewart and her husband, Kevin. She was a treasured Nan and Granny to her grandchildren: Brittney Wilson and husband Matt; Brandon Bass and wife Sarah; Shelby Johnson and husband Chase; Kendall Dowdy and husband Tommy; and Kyle Stewart and wife Jessica.

Her family continued to grow with the blessing of her great-grandchildren: Hunter, Blake, Lily, Nathan, Wyatt, June, Lainey, Judah, Caleb, Ruth, and Allison. She loved each of them dearly, and being their Nan and Granny brought her so much joy.

Frances is also survived by her sisters, Lucille Manning and husband Scott, and Peggy Micklewitz and husband Joey, along with a large and loved extended family of many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Frances was, above all, a follower of Christ, having accepted Jesus as her Savior. She lived her life with a quiet faith and a deep love for the people God gave her. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, a loving mother, a treasured Nan/Granny, and a homemaker in the truest sense of the word. She poured so much of herself into caring for her home and the people in it.

Over the years, she was a Brownie leader, Sunday school teacher, cake baker, wedding coordinator, seamstress, gardener, caregiver, friend to many, and a mighty prayer warrior. Frances was always busy doing something for someone she loved. Caring for others came naturally to her, and so much of her life was spent serving the people around her.

She also had a wonderful sense of humor. Those who knew her best knew that beneath her gentle nature was a playful, funny side that could catch you by surprise.

Early in their marriage, Frances and Zane made a commitment for their home and the family they would raise: “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” - Joshua 24:15.

They lived by those words and made their faith the foundation of their family. That faith has continued through the generations, with each member of their family coming to know Jesus as their Savior.

Because of this, while we grieve deeply now, we do so knowing this goodbye is not forever. One day soon we will see her again…healed and glorified in Heaven.

Frances was welcomed into Heaven by those she loved who had gone before her: her mother, Virginia Hughes; her father, Rex Hughes; her sisters, Linda and Mary; and her precious great-grandson, Blake.

We find comfort in knowing that the arms waiting to welcome her Home were ones she had deeply missed.

Family will receive friends from 3:30 - 4:00 pm Saturday, August 22, 2026 at Wildwood Baptist Church in Mesquite. A Celebration of Life will begin at 4:00 pm.
