James Leslie Welch

He was born on December 26, 1947, in Lake Charles, Louisiana, to Jinks H. Welch and Florence Shows Welch. Coach Poo’s life was marked by steady wisdom, deep devotion to those he loved, and a humor that brought lightness and ease to the people around him.

Coach Poo grew up in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and graduated from LaGrange High School. He continued his education at Tyler Jr. College, where he excelled in basketball, and later completed his Bachelor’s Degree at University of Houston.

He began his professional journey with a short career with the Kentucky Kernels, part of the American Basketball Association. He then devoted himself to education and coaching, first at Waco ISD, where his girls’ basketball team was undefeated for two years. Coach Poo went on to become a long-time teacher and coach for Canton ISD, retiring 13 years ago. Even in retirement, he remained loved and respected by the many students he taught—an enduring reflection of the steady guidance he offered and the genuine care he showed in everyday moments.

Coach Poo met his true love, Diana Derrickson, on the campus of Tyler Jr. College. They married on August 1, 1970, and shared 56 wonderful, blessed years of marriage. He was a loving husband, father, and grandpa, and his family was the center of his life and pride. Coach Poo loved his family and his pets dearly.

An avid music and sports collector, Coach Poo could go toe to toe with anyone in his knowledge of music and sports, a passion that spoke to his sharp mind and lasting curiosity. He was also an avid marathon runner for many years, including running the Boston Marathon.

Coach Poo was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Canton. His presence there, as in so many places, was defined by quiet steadiness, faithful commitment, and the kind of humor that made people feel welcome and at ease.

Coach Poo is survived by his beloved wife, Diana Welch; daughter, Nicole Welch; granddaughter, Amari Welch; sister, Mary Welch; and brother, Jinks Welch Jr.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Jinks and Florence Welch; and sister in-law, Mike Welch.

The family will hold a memorial service celebrating his life at a later date.
