It is with great sorrow that our family honors the passing of our husband, father, brother, and friend Lynn Shelton Carter. He left this world on October 14th surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer.
A visitation to honor Lynn will be held 6-8 pm Wednesday at Eubank Funeral Home in Canton.
Lynn was born on July 24, 1951 to William Morgan and Vina Maye Carter, in Tyler, Texas. He was truly a modern day superhero. His life was marked by a series of challenges and miracles that started when he was just an infant. His right arm had a large birthmark and a second set of major arteries. He was treated with frequent, high dose radiation and x-ray treatments until the arm was severely burned and scar tissue replaced the birth mark. His mother told stories of how ill he would become after treatments and many times she feared he would die. He never let that stop him. He became a veteran, a business owner, a very successful retail associate for several local chains and even tried his hand at a small cattle raising business and was also a successful day trader of stocks. He spent his free time remodeling his home and reworking his small property until his retirement in 2016. He was a quiet hero, but had timeless words of wisdom, such as “Poop in one hand and wish in the other and see which fills up first?,” “Yeah Right!!!”, and “Child come with me!” [You knew you were in trouble then.]
The summer of 2005 marks an amazing chapter of the superhero strength of Lynn. He was seriously injured in a car wreck that killed him. Resuscitated twice, he defied all odds and made a miraculous recovery where he gained all his function back and returned to work. His only kryptonite was cancer; after a 16 month battle that he fought with bravery, wit, humor, and honor up to the very end.
He is preceded in death by his parents mentioned above; his stepmother, Pat Carter; his step sister; and step son, Bobby Joe (BJ) Singletary. He is survived by his loving wife, Sharon; his children Virginia Singletary (spouse of BJ Singletary); Vernon Lewis (Buddy) Singletary, and spouse Jeanetta; Christina (CC) Blakeley and spouse James; Teri Lynn Winklemann and spouse Adam; Michelle Vinson; and Carrie Hebert and spouse Joshua. He also leaves 3 siblings, 23 grandchildren, 23 great grand-children, and numerous uncles, aunts, and cousins.
The world may not notice the loss of our quiet laid back hero, but as all great heroes, he will live in our hearts forever.
"A hero is an individual who finds strength to persevere and endure in spite of the overwhelming obstacles." Christopher Reeve
