Our beloved Jean, Mom, Aunt Jean, Fou Fae, Mama J earned her wings on the evening of July 4, 2026 at her home in Canton, Texas, with her girls by her side. To everyone who knew her, she was dearly loved: a role model, confidant, inspiration, and rock that helped hold our family together. She was funny, generous with her love and never missed a chance to remind others how much they meant to her. She was considered a loyal friend.
Born in Commerce, Texas to Harry G Clifton and Oneida K Clifton, Jean grew up with a lifelong love for the town where she was born. Although she traveled back and forth to Dallas for school, Commerce always held a special place in her heart; and she even participated in a local beauty pageant as a fan favorite. She graduated from South Oak Cliff High School in 1959, and attended East Texas State University where she earned her degree.
In 1961, Jean met and married the love of her life, Harry Louis Simms, also a Commerce native. After college they moved to Dallas to begin their careers and made it their home as they lovingly raised their three daughters. Jean used her degree to become a treasured elementary school teacher with Richardson Independent School District for 30 years. Parents and students eagerly competed to be chosen for special teacher-student activities. Post retirement, she enjoyed traveling, spending time with family and loving pets; some of whom she is now reunited with including her beloved Zoe and Bear.
Jean was preceded in death by: her parents, Harry Glen and Oneida Kay; husband, Harry Louis; and sister G. Kay.
She is survived by: her sister Dixie; three girls Stacey (Kelli), Lori (David), and Aimee (Tanya). She will also be deeply missed by her grandchildren Austin, Lindsey, Heather, Hunter and Hayden; and by those she enjoyed watching most of all; her great-grandchildren Rory, Palmer, Sadie, Emery, Reese, Baylor and Harlie.
We’d like to thank the wonderful team at Heart to Heart Hospice. We are deeply grateful for the love, care and attention they provided to Jean in her final weeks.
No matter how she was known, as a daughter, sister, mom, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, or friend, there is no doubt she loved those close to her deeply and would do anything for them. Fly high, and be the angel in heaven you always were on earth. Choosing one of your favorite days to reunite with those gone before you, you will always be our firework in the skies.
Thank you for loving her. There will be a celebration of life held at a later date. Details will be shared as soon as available.
In lieu of flowers, please plant a tree or make a donation to your favorite pet rescue, cancer research or organization of your choice in Jean’s memory.
