Mary passed away peacefully on January 23, 2024 in Dallas, Texas. She was born on August 9, 1933 in Wills Point, Texas to Napoleon B. Scott and Lura Stewart Scott.
Mary grew up in the Wills Point area and graduated from Wills Point High School. On December 9, 1951, she married her one true love, Joe Waddill Jr. after a short courtship of only two months. After spending one year in Virginia, Joe left the Air Force and he and Mary Ellen moved to Dallas, Texas, where they found a garage apartment and jobs. Mary worked as a teacher’s aide for the Dallas ISD for almost 20 years. The couple later retired to Van Zandt County to live out their golden years and spent time with their grandchildren.
Mary was a woman with a servant’s heart. For many years, she delivered for Meals on Wheels, taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School, always there to give a helping hand. She was a long time member of Faith Baptist Church in Chandler. Mary enjoyed quilting; her skill and the love she poured into her quilts can be seen in all the quilts she did for her children and grandchildren. Mary was an avid 84 player; you did not call or interrupt her game playing time; or if Wheel of Fortune was on. Mary loved time with her family. Family was her pride and joy. She was a wonderful cook and loved cooking for her family. Her love could be found in the handmade quilts and the great food she fixed for family and friends. Mary will be dearly missed but live on in the hearts and memories of all that knew and loved her.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents, N. B. and Luna Scott; beloved husband, Joe Waddill Jr.; brothers, Henry Scott and Robert Scott.
She is survived by her children: Susan and Rick Mc Dowell, John and Jean Waddill; grandchildren: Katy and Charles Smith, Jake and Jessie Page, Jordan and Ryan Burks, Becca and Logan Presnall, Sarah and Jacob Berry, Leah Waddill; great grandchildren, Parker, Hudson, Jolie, Addi, Jenna and Beau; sister and brother in-law, Carolyn and Joe Corrigan.
