Ronald Roy Taylor was born on July 11, 1943, in Wylie, Texas, to Melvin and Mary Smallwood Taylor. Raised in Garland, Texas, he was a proud Garland Owl, and enjoyed playing football and singing in the choir.
Ron’s life changed forever at Orchard Hills Baptist Church, where he first spotted his beloved Elizabeth in the choir. Their romance blossomed through letters exchanged while Ron was in boot camp, and they married on September 30, 1967, just a month before he deployed to Vietnam.
After returning in late 1968, Ron continued his education at East Texas State University, earning degrees in History and Physical Education. He began his teaching career in Garland ISD, eventually earning his doctorate in Education and advancing to become the Director of Elementary Schools. Despite opportunities to relocate for his career, Ron and Liz chose to stay in Garland to raise their daughters in a nurturing church and community. After retiring from the district, Ron served as Headmaster at Heritage Christian Academy in Rockwall for nine years, where he was a cherished leader and friend.
Ron’s faith was the cornerstone of his life. He was a dedicated mentor and teacher who served in every church he attended over the years. At Orchard Hills Baptist Church, he poured into students through youth ministry and spent years mentoring young men through church sports leagues. Most recently, he was a devoted member of First Baptist Church of Rockwall, where he led his class missions ministry with great heart and commitment.
Ron’s greatest joy was his family. He is now reunited in heaven with his beloved wife, Elizabeth. He is survived by his daughters, Sarah Walker (Eddie) and Amy Douglas (Troy); his grandchildren, Cate Baxter (Jake), Caroline Treadway (Todd), Cole Walker, and Audrey and Alaina Douglas; and his great-grandchildren, Rhett, Ellie, and Sutton Baxter, and Diana Cate Treadway. He is also survived by his sister, Lynn Rackley (Richard); his brother, Tom Taylor (Ann); his brother-in-law, Jerry Walters (Diane); and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Ron’s legacy lives on through his cherished family and the countless lives he touched for Christ.
