Betty Jean Van Camp, 89, of North Fort Myers, passed away peacefully, on Wednesday morning, October 9, 2013 after valiantly battling several health issues. At the time of her death she was surrounded by her husband and three of her five children. Betty was born in May 1924 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. After high school she moved to Washington D.C. where she worked for the FBI and the Naval Research Center. After the war was ended, she moved to Washington State to be close to her parents and her sister. This is where she met and married Vernon Van Camp, her husband of 63 years. Vern and Betty had 5 children: Rick, Wanda, Vern, Tom and Jim and 11 grandchildren: Kim, Scott, Greg, Mike, Keith, Sarah, Kaleb, Damien, Colby, Griffin and Gareth; and 13 great grandchildren: Hayden, Carmen, Madison, Olivia, Tristan, Little Luc, Khloe, Audrey, Matthew, Noelani, Josh, Noah, and Liam.
Betty and her husband, Vern, raised their children in Klamath Falls, Oregon, where Betty was a mother, homemaker and part-time kindergarten teacher. In 1965 she went to work at U.S. Bank in Klamath Falls and retired after 20 years. Betty and her husband then moved to Brookings, Oregon upon their retirement. Then, after snowbirding to Ft. Myers, Florida for a couple of years during the winter months, they decided to sell their condo in Brookings and move here permanently. Before moving to Ft. Myers, Betty and Vern were able to do some traveling and visited Hawaii, Mexico, Germany, England and Scotland. They also took several cruises in the Caribbean.
Betty had many hobbies among which were sewing, needlepoint, creating Christmas tree ornaments, reading, gardening and creating floral arrangements. She was also an excellent cook and baker. Betty is survived by her husband, Vern, her sister, Dorothy, her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother – she was greatly loved by all and will be terribly missed. Her funeral mass will be held at St. Therese Catholic Church, N. Ft, Myers on October 30th at 11:00 am. Her ashes will be interned at Coral Ridge Cemetery in Cape Coral, Florida. In lieu of flowers, her family requests that donations be made in her name to:
