When I was growing up, for a number of reasons I was mostly estranged with my family and blood relatives. My mother, sister and I relied on the kindness of my mother's best friend, Tammy Zul and their family. Tammy's family welcomed us with open arms. We became a part of their family unit as much as if we were their own flesh and blood.

Tammy's mother, Cammie, was like a grandmother to me. We enjoyed holidays together and some of my favorite childhood toys were presents from Cammie (she fed my Star Trek nerddom for a while there).

Cammie always had a smile and kind words for you. She was a kind, soft-spoken soul. She was incredibly proud of me and always supported my music endeavors, even though I wasn't a blood relative.

Cammie passed away this past week. It breaks my heart that I can't be in Florida with the rest of the Whiteside family. I'm thinking about all of you, and I'm just as devasted by this loss as if I lost my own grandma.

Cammie, thanks for the memories, the kindness, the acceptance, and the unconditional love. Rest in peace.

I am so glad I got to be with Cammie at Derrick's wedding.  I know she will be missed by all who were touched by her life.  My prayers are with y'all
