With deep sorrow and heartfelt gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the passing of Claudia Diane Gorla (neé Rathjens), age 81, on Sunday, May 31, 2026. Claudia departed this world peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, compassion, and unwavering devotion to her family and friends.
A Life of Love and Dedication
Claudia was born August 15, 1944, in Brooklyn, New York to the Rathjens family, eldest daughter of John William and Margaret Mary Rathjens. Claudia grew up with her younger sisters Joyce, Brenda, and Janet, embodying kindness, warmth, and a gentle, yet feisty spirit. She carried these qualities throughout her life, blessing those fortunate enough to know her. She graduated in 1962 with Academic Honors from St Francis Xavier Academy in Brooklyn, and married John C. Gorla, Sr in July 1963. Claudia was a devoted mother to John Jr. and Suzanne, whose motherly love knew no bounds. She nurtured her children with patience, wisdom, and laughter, always offering a listening ear and comforting embrace. Her home was a sanctuary filled with warmth, encouragement, and unconditional love. Family fun times of game playing, arts & crafts, and many weeks of family camping across the USA blessed their times together.
Family and Community
Claudia’s greatest joy in life was her family. She cherished every moment spent with her children and grandchildren, celebrating their achievements and supporting them through challenges. Her traditions, recipes, and stories will live on in the hearts of those she loved. Claudia was not only a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother but also a treasured friend. Her generosity, sense of humor, and ability to see the good in others made her a pillar in her community. Most importantly, Claudia’s love of the Catholic faith began at her birth, as she was born on the Feast of the Immaculate Assumption. Her lifelong devotion to the Blessed Mother was key in her faith formation and that of her children.
Legacy
Claudia’s legacy is one of kindness, independence, resilience, and grace. She inspired all who knew her to live with empathy and integrity. Her memory will be cherished and kept alive by her family, friends, and all whose lives she touched. Her lifelong career in various customer service roles, began at Consolidated Edison in New York City, Long Island Lighting Co., and ended at Lee County Cooperative in Cape Coral. While working at Sprint in 2005, Claudia earned their E.A.S.T. – Service Gold Award for Outstanding Customer Service Performance. Although she put in many hours at work along with a long commute, Claudia always found time for her family.
