Florine (Jefferies) Broughton was born on June 3, 1933. She was one of six children born to Richard Jefferies and Rosie Lee (Douglas) Jefferies. Due to a clerical filing error by the midwife, when she applied for her marriage license, Florine discovered that her “government” birthday is listed as June 9th. Because of the loss of her mother at a young age, she loved mothering her own as well as other children in the neighborhood.
When she was in her teens, she was sent to continue her education at Southern Christian Institute (SCI) boarding school where she met the love of her life Kenneth Broughton Sr. In 2005, following 52 years of marriage, Kenneth sadly preceded Florine in passing. From their union, they had 7 children. Kenneth Jr. (pre-deceased), Deborah, Alisia (pre-deceased) Ellen, Vincent, Jacquelyn (pre-deceased) and Terence.
During her time at SCI, she also met her life-long friend Mildred Shepherd. Their friendship was still strong after almost 75 years.
She loved to sing. Even on the day before her passing, her church came by and she joined them as they sang a few songs for her. During her lifetime she sang with many choirs. She had a passion for many things, including travel, photography and bowling and above all else, her faith in the Lord.
She is survived by her sister Deloris Dorsey and brother James Jefferies, her children Deborah Broughton, Ellen Sanders, Vincent (Nicole) Broughton, Terence (Rochelle) Broughton and Pauline (David) Nelson. She also leaves a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.
For 30 years she has made Cape Coral her home where she had her Florida family, Joy (Joy-Belle) & Gerry, Pat & Garth, and many, many more.
She will be missed by all.
