He was born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island on July 17, 1932. As a young man, and the oldest of 8 children, Henry learned early on how to organize and develop the work ethics that followed him through his life. After leaving Rhode Island in 1960, he moved to North Fort Myers, Florida to assist his father in running a Pure Oil service station on the corner of US 41 and Pondella. This would expand to another full-service station, Union 76 on the corner of Del Prado and Cape Coral Parkway in Cape Coral. Numerous construction companies, organizations and early settlers to Cape Coral found Henry’s station to be dependable and had accounts handled with reliable mechanical services and weekly full-service gas fill-ups at the pump. Many stranded along the road would be relieved when they saw Henry pull up in a AAA towing truck.
Henry joined the Cape Coral Moose Lodge 2199 in December 1975. He was a devoted member until his passing and loved every minute spent at the Lodge. It was his second home. The list of positions held (some for numerous years) include Legion Activities Chairman, Sergeant of Arms, Ritual Chairman, Membership Chairman, Historian Chairman, Fellowship Chairman, Treasurer, Prelate, Jr. Governor, Trustee, Jr. Past Governor, Governor, Vice President of the Legion of the Cape Coral Moose Lodge, Fellowship Secretary and Legion Marshal. He received the Merit Award for 1985-1988, Fellowship Degree 1996, Moose of the Year 1992, Moose Legion Award of the year 2001 and his most treasured accomplishment becoming a Moose Pilgrim in the year 2000. He visited Moose members in the hospital or nursing homes, worked with Deborah Heart and Lung, the Lions Club, and other charities the Moose Lodge sponsored.
He had a passion for bowling and would be seen at the bowling alley a couple times a week playing on a league. He never lost that desire for the “perfect” game. Even in bowling, he took on the position of treasurer keeping track of all the league teams and their winnings. He always said, staying busy was what kept you young.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, Theresa, his parents, Victor and Alice Heroux, his bother Leo, his sister Theresa and other family members he loved and cherished. He is survived by his three children, Victoria Danton (Larry), Lillian Botelho (Jim), Alan Heroux (Maureen), his sisters Doris and Cecile, his brothers Albert, Victor and Gilbert, in-laws, grandchildren, great and great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
After long hours working it was not unusual for him to be found playing on the floor with us kids. Sunday mornings always found him in the kitchen cooking breakfast for the family before heading to church. The time he spent with us he was always teaching us something, how to fish, fix a flat tire, pump gas, check your oil, keep a checkbook balanced, and organization skills to help us become independent adults. He was a constant pillar of strength, love, guidance and support. His devotion to our mother and his family taught us the meaning of commitment. No matter what the circumstance was during our growing years, his patience, kindness and calm demeanor was steadfast.
Henry lives on through the wonderful gifts he gave his family and friends, love, hope, strength, caring, giving, sympathy, empathy, kindness and many more.
