Herbert was educated in the Birmingham, Alabama Public School System. He continued his education at Talladega College in Alabama, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he earned degrees in sociology.
He served in the United States Army from 1946 to 1952 ending with the rank of Master Sergeant. Later he worked with the United States Census Bureau as a survey statistician (demography) in Washington, D.C.
He spent over four decades teaching sociology in institutions of higher education, such as the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Hampton University, Tuskegee University, University of Maryland-Baltimore County, Towson State University, Morgan State University, and the Community College of Baltimore County.
Herbert and his devoted soul mate, Alice Monte, were together for 34 years, and have lived in Baltimore, Maryland, and Cape Coral, Florida.
He was a life member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. His roots with the organization go back to his college days and later with the Hampton-Phoebus (VA) NAACP Branch where he was recognized for his work in voter registration/political action. He served as President of the Maryland State Conference NAACP, and a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.
Herbert is survived by his loving soul mate, Alice Monte; sons Herbert H. Lindsey, (Jessica), Thomas Monte (Lisa), Andrew Monte and Stephen Monte (George Driver); daughter Rachel Berge (Garry); two granddaughters Annissia Lindsey and Morgan Lindsey; three grandsons Christopher Monte, Garret Berge and Eli Monte; devoted nephew Archie Hale and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Herbert was predeceased by his parents, Ruth and John J. Lindsey, Sr.; six brothers Weaman Hale, Leon Hale, William H. Hale, Samuel McClenny, John L. Lindsey, Jr., and Charles Lindsey; two sisters Katherine Jones and Allie B. Madison. He will be mourned and affectionately missed by family, friends and associates.
