Hugh Paul Nuckolls, 81, passed away on Saturday, April 15th, 2023. Born in Hendersonville, North Carolina, he was the youngest son of the late Hugh and Minnie Mae Calhoun Nuckolls. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Billie Jean Nuckolls. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brothers Joseph Nuckolls and Edward Nuckolls.
After graduating from Hendersonville High School, he attended Mars Hill College earning degrees in History, Political Science and Economics. From Mars Hill he moved to Alabama to continue his education. In 1968 Paul received a Juris Doctorate degree from Cumberland School of Law and became a member of the Alabama Bar.
Thereafter, Paul moved to Lee County FL to serve as the Dean of Student Activities at Edison College. In 1971, he was appointed Assistant Public Defender. Paul was elected to the House of Representatives in 1972 and was nominated as Outstanding Freshman Representative, serving five terms. He was a member of the Florida Bar for fifty years, practicing in Fort Myers with Gus Belcher, Esq. and Karl Johnson, Esq.
While serving as a legislator, Paul was awarded the “Distinguished Service Award” by District 13, Veterans of Foreign Wars. Paul was instrumental in bringing I75 to Southwest Florida and acquiring rights of way for his district, including Lee County, Charlotte County and Hendry County. Paul took pride in serving Southwest Florida and helping others.
Paul will be missed by his children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
