OATLEY, JACK Dr. Jack D. Oatley, Ph.D., age 92, passed away at Hope Hospice in Cape Coral, Florida surrounded by his family three weeks after his diagnoses with cancer. Jack was born in Traverse City, Michigan to Elizabeth and Carl Oatley. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Dorothy VanEpps and Charlotte Nardizzi, grand daughter-in-law Michelle Oatley and his wife, the love of his life, Patsye Ruth. He is survived by his brothers Richard and Carl Oatley, and sister Virginia Ritondale; his children D’Arcie Lee (Steve) Kisner, Gregory (Sharon) Oatley, Kori Linn (Scott) Tracey; grandchildren Todd (Raquel) Glaesmer, Jason Glaesmer, Jared Oatley, Jaimie (Kendall) Spencer, Kyle (Karen) Oatley, Jordan (Sabrina) Gibson; and great grandchildren Kelita, Cecil, Josiah and Jack. Jack joined the Navy at 17 and finished pilot training just as WWII ended. He received his bachelor degree from Central Michigan in business and managed several small companies before moving into the field of education. While teaching and coaching in Northport, he received his master’s degree from Michigan State University. He became Superintendent at Sabin Schools near Traverse City and eventually moved to Grand Rapids taking a position as the Assistant Superintendent in charge of business at Northview Public Schools. While at Northview, he received his Education Specialist degree. The last 19 years of his career were spent at Kent Intermediate School District as Associate Superintendent. During that time, he worked as a lobbyist in Washington D.C. for 21 school districts and proudly achieved a Ph.D. in school administration from Michigan State University. In 1991, Jack was elected into the Michigan Education Hall of Fame where his plaque reads: Jack D. Oatley, Ph.D., demonstrated a high level of leadership and accomplishment in school business management throughout his career. As Associate Superintendent of Kent Intermediate School District, he was very active in legislative issues and served as president of the Association of School Business Officials International in 1987. For his outstanding contributions to education, Michigan School Business Officials honored its former past president with the Distinguished Service Award, the highest honor given by the Association. Jack retired in 1991 and he in Pat wintered in Sabal Springs resort in North Fort Myers, Florida and summered at Big Star Lake. They filled their time with golf and travel along with countless hours spent with friends. Jack cared for Pat in her declining health during her fight with Alzheimer’s disease. He was relentless in his loving approach while taking care of her. During his retirement, Jack’s real enjoyment of life was educating and involving himself in Sabal Springs and local government affairs. Jack will be fondly remembered by his family, friends, and colleagues for his direct and fair approach to other people, his kids, and of course, finance. In lieu of flowers donations can be in Jacks name to Hope Hospice of Cape Coral, FL. The family if planning a private memorial service at a later date.

I didn't know my Uncle Jack that well but I do know he cherished his family. He took all his siblings out every year to a dinner in Traverse City. I'm so glad he was able to do that one last time before he left this earth. Rest in peace Uncle Jack.💕💞
