Jim was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend — he touched countless lives with his lively smile and playful wit.
He was born June 29, 1924 in Belmont, MA, to parents George Vouros and Helen Avtges. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942, shortly after the U.S. entered World War II, when he was 18 years old. He served as an Aviation Electrician’s Mate and a Plane Captain aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise in the South Pacific, earning a Navy Unit Commendation and a salute from President Harry Truman in New York Harbor in 1945.
Jim and his wife Vanthea (Hadges) Vouros were married in 1948 and raised their three children in the Boston area. Jim spent his career working as an electrician, he owned an electrical contracting business with his brother Charlie Vouros. The brothers worked on residential and commercial projects throughout New England,
including dozens of the area’s most loved movie theaters. Jim was a lifelong tinkerer and handyman and also worked as a disc jockey and in real estate. He enjoyed boating and fishing, spending summers at Humarock Beach in Scituate, MA. Jim and Van moved to Cape Coral, Florida in 1982 and loved their adopted community. They were active members of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Ft. Myers and Jim volunteered for two decades at Cape Coral hospital.
He is survived by Vanthea, his wife of 70 years, and his three children, Carol Poulakis of Medway, MA, Irene Kelley of Georgetown, MA, and James Vouros, Jr., of Philadelphia, as well as six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Monday, June 18, 2018 at 10 a.m. at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Ft. Myers and entombment with military honors to follow at Coral Ridge Cemetery in Cape Coral. The family requests that donations in Jim’s memory be sent to Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church.
