Janet Claire Head

Janet was born in Newark, NJ to Ernest Asa Barker Jr. and the former Mildred Gladys Lorenz. The second of three children (June, Larry), Janet was raised in Nutley, NJ where she attended the public schools, graduating from Nutley High School in 1957.

Following high school, Janet attended St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in New York City to pursue a nursing degree. She graduated in September 1960 in ceremonies held in The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in New York City. During her time in Nursing School, she met and eventually married Henry Herbert “Herb” Head in July 1960 at Vincent United Methodist Church in Nutley, NJ. The couple had 4 children, Randy Head (Ryan Frost), Eric Head (Jennifer Heil), Lauren Glantz (Rod) and Aimee McMahon (Bob), plus 5 grandchildren (Meghan McMahon, Kyle McMahon, Tyler Glantz, Spencer Glantz and Sophia Head).

Following her marriage and graduation, Janet and Herb moved to the Metro Washington, D.C. area while Herb completed his PhD at the University of Maryland and where Randy was born. Following his graduation in 1963, the three moved to Gainesville, FL when Herb accepted a professorship at the University of Florida. Janet was a long-term Labor and Delivery nurse at the University Hospital, but she also interspersed her years there with work at a doctor’s private practice and at North Florida Regional Medical Center.

In 1974 and again in 1984, Janet and the family moved to France while Herb did sabbaticals abroad, first in Jouy-en-Josas, then in Gif-sur-Yvette.

Janet was a long-time member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Gainesville. She was a loving and caring daughter, wife and mother who will be deeply missed!
