Born on April 2, 1963, John was a 1980 graduate of Guilderland Central High School and went on to graduate from The College of Saint Rose. Before his early retirement, he enjoyed a successful career as a financial consultant with AXA Advisors.
John married Margaret “Peggy” Hofmann on September 20, 1997 in Peconic, NY on Long Island. Together they built a life filled with friendship, laughter, and adventure. They made many friends in the Saratoga and Poughkeepsie, NY, areas before relocating to Florida - first to Punta Gorda and eventually to Bokeelia on Pine Island, where they made their home.
John and Peggy shared a love of traveling, and for many years they enjoyed sailing adventures to the British Virgin Islands with John’s parents as well as numerous family trips to Peconic to the Hofmann family home, and days spent aboard their Boston Whaler.
John was known for his warmth, intelligence, and genuine interest in the lives of those around him. Affectionately known as “Uncle John B” to his nieces and nephews, he loved hearing about their lives, accomplishments, and adventures. Family gatherings were brighter because of his presence, and sense of humor.
A lifelong lover of music, John enjoyed all genres and was renowned among family and friends for his remarkable knowledge of music trivia. He also treasured the many late-night conversations he shared with his brothers-in-law over a few beers, discussing everything from current events to family stories and memories.
John is survived by his beloved wife, Margaret “Peggy” Hofmann Leather of Bokeelia, FL; parents, Susan and Daniel Leather of Bokeelia, FL; sister, Lynn (Tom) LeCours of Cossayuna Lake, NY; sisters-in-law, Kathy Stupak (Jim) and Maryann Herrick (Dean); and many nieces and nephews, who will forever remember and cherish their “Uncle John B.”
John’s kindness, wit, love of music, and devotion to his family and friends will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His memory will live on in the stories shared, the laughter remembered, and the love and care he felt for them all.
