Richard J. Fontaine, of Cape Coral, Florida fell asleep in Christ on August 29, 2020 at the age of 83. He is survived by his one daughter, Lisa Conn, and his two sons, Jerry Barton and Dusty Fontaine, In addition, there are over 35 surviving grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
Richard was Pastor of a small Christian church called the Remnant Church of Jesus Christ for almost 40 years. He was beloved by his congregation and was well known for his love of God, the truth, and the church. He had a tradition of praying for each person on his prayer list by name every morning. While the list got longer, his prayer time each morning grew longer as well. Family, friends, acquaintances and even enemies were prayed for behind closed doors without fail.
In addition to the church, Pastor Richard loved watching and playing sports, fishing, vacationing and eating. No one enjoyed eating more than he did. He savored every moment of a meal or dessert – especially dessert. He especially liked visiting Disney World and St. Pete Beach with the love of his life, Ruby, who fell asleep in Jesus in November of 2010. He was a drummer by profession when he was younger, playing the night clubs in and around Fort Lauderdale, Florida where he met Ruby and her five children.
Richard had his pilot’s license and received many job offers to fly for commercial airlines, but decided to make his living as a painter/paperhanger – which he excelled at. He also had his professional barber’s license.
Richard Fontaine enlisted in the army when he was 19 and was stationed in Korea during the Korean War. Upon discharge from the Army (August 1960,) he joined the Coast Guard and received an honorable discharge in January of 1962. He was very proud of his country and his service and wore his military hats proudly wherever he went.
Pastor Richard’s highly infectious smile will be sorely missed. He was an honest, hard-working man who shared his faith in the scriptures with all that would listen and with many who just pretended to listen. He was a man of integrity and his word was his bond. All have received a blessing for having known him.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, September 13, 2020 at 1:00 PM from the chapel of Coral Ridge Funeral Home, 950 Chiquita Blvd. S, Cape Coral, Florida. The family will receive guests beginning at 1:00 PM.
