Sandor "Sandy" Kovacs

Sandor Ernest Kovacs of Cape Coral, Florida, better known simply as "Sandy" to his family and friends, passed away peacefully at his home on August 8, 2026 following some recent health setbacks. He was 77 years old.

Sandy was born on February 19, 1949, in Boston, Massachusetts and was the proud son to Irene (Allerie) and Arpad Sandor Kovacs. He was a member of the United States Marine Corps who served with distinction from 1967-1971 in the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device, the Navy Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with Four Stars, Bronze Star with "V" Designation and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry.

Upon returning from wartime service, Sandy joined the Whatcom County Sheriff's Office in Bellingham, Washington and was commended for meritorious service in the line-of-duty. He later transferred back to his home state of Massachusetts and joined the Norfolk County Sheriff's Office where he advanced to the rank of Captain prior to retirement.

For most of his adult life Sandy was known for his trademark white Corvette, heading to the Gym for a workout or cruising the beachfront boulevard. When he wasn't visiting Nantasket Beach to relax, you would likely find him in the Social Club at the Torre Dei Passeri Mutual Benefit Society in Quincy where he enjoyed many activities and watching the Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics and Bruins. He supported many Veteran causes over the years and was the perfect definition of "Once a Marine, Always a Marine." He was also known for his prowess on the grill prepping Sausages for the Fenway Park vendors or just cooking Steak Tips at home for the family.

Sandy was married to Janice P. Kovacs and leaves to cherish his memory his children Matthew Kovacs of Washington; Christopher S. Kovacs of Cape Coral and Allarie D. Kovacs of New York.

A Graveside Service for Sandy will be Celebrated by Deacon Joe Hopgood at 11:30 AM on Thursday, September 10, 2026 at Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Road 72, Sarasota, Florida 34241, (941) 922-7200. Military Honors will be Offered by the United States Marine Corps.
