William Francis Kane, III, 80, of North Fort Myers, FL, passed away on Saturday, May 2, 2026, in Fort Myers. Born January 7, 1946, in Boston, MA, he was the son of the late William and Eva Kane. A proud United States Marine Corps veteran, Bill carried the spirit, discipline, and grit of the Marines with him every day of his life.
Bill was happiest with a tool in his hand and a project in front of him. He could fix just about anything, and if he couldn’t, he’d tinker with it until he could. His lawn mower was practically a member of the family, and trips to Home Depot and Lowe’s were less errands and more treasured outings.
He had a lifelong love for old cars—especially El Caminos and Rancheros—and could talk about them for hours. His dry, direct sense of humor made him unforgettable; he never hesitated to call things exactly as he saw them, and people loved him for it.
A devoted dog lover, Bill always had room in his heart for four-legged companions. And true to his Marine roots, he kept a dumbbell within reach wherever he sat, constantly working on his grip strength—“once a Marine, always a Marine” wasn’t a saying for him, but a way of life.
Bill watched the weather like some people watch sports. He tracked storms not only in Florida but anywhere his family lived, calling ahead to warn them of what was coming. It was one of the many quiet ways he showed his love.
He never lost his taste for the foods of his New England upbringing—cod, haddock, and especially swordfish. But no matter the meal, he always saved room for his favorite treat: Neapolitan ice cream.
Bill leaves behind family and friends who will forever remember his humor, his stubbornness, his generosity, and the unmistakable way he made life more interesting. His legacy lives on in the stories he told, the things he fixed, the dogs he loved, and the people he protected—whether through a well-timed weather warning or a perfectly timed joke.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Judy Kane; five children, Jennifer Waterway (Ken), Bill Kane, IV (Theresa), Anthony Kane (Carrie), Tammie Hopson (Kurt, Sr.), and Kenneth Youmans (Chasidy); nine grandchildren, Reese, Ella, Will, V, Lily, Barrett, Whitney,Kurt, Jr., Kinnley, and Megan; six great grandchildren, Taylor, Riley, Jaxson, Cameron, Hendry, and Kallan; brother, John Kane; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Patricia Holmes.
The services for Bill are being held privately.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to CityGate Ministries in loving memory of William Francis Kane, III.
