John Webster Hislop, the son of George and Marion Hislop, was born in Arcola on January 20, 1927. He lived on the family farm and went to Clare School until grade 8 when he and his mother moved to Kisbey as his father had joined the army at the start of WWII. Grades 9 and 10 were taken in Arcola where he and his mother lived with his grandmother.
His father returned from overseas and was stationed in Dundurn so John and his mother moved to Saskatoon. He graduated from Nutana Collegiate and promptly joined the army.
After the war John attended the University of Saskatchewan one year before moving to Edmonton, Alberta to attend NAIT . While working there he met Florence Slater and on January 20, 1952 they were married. For 13 years John and Florence lived in Edmonton where he was employed with British American Oil as an instrumentation engineer. They had two daughters, Kathy and Marion, while living there.
In 1965 John moved his family to Arcola where he took over the family farm. That year their youngest daughter, Helen, was born. 18 years later, after making a life on the farm, he and Florence retired to Arcola.
He loved music – he was a wonderful dancer and singer. He was a member of the United Church choir for many years. He loved to curl, play cards, fish, travel and spend time with his family and friends. One of his fonder memories was of the summer he worked in the Yukon at a gold mining camp. He was a true gentleman who was always willing to lend a hand.
He will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his three daughters, Kathy (Barry) Lawless, Marion (Dana) Hingston, Helen (Devon) Fornwald; grandchildren, Clayton (Kim) & Carmen Lawless, Jennifer Hingston & Sarah (Mark) Jenkins, Taylor & Jillian Fornwald; great-grandchildren, Benjamin Lawless & Hannah Jenkins. Predeceased by his wife Florence.
