What a shock — I am very sad. 

Don and I had a couple of different friendship moments in our young lives. The first was throughout our high school years in the early 1980s. While many kids were out doing "high school stuff," like hanging out with friends, or going to football games, Don and I worked for longtime resident of Carmel, Jim Steckley. Owning one of the only restaurants in town, which doubled as a music venue, called Steckley's Olde House. It was THE place to be and always crowded. It was very physically demanding work, especially during the summer, when the kitchen became a heat bath—it's where we grew up. Oh, the stories we could tell... 

I never understood why Don and I clicked, but we did. He was relatively quiet and darkly funny. It was a special sense of humor, and he could really make me laugh. Plus, every time he laughed, I laughed right along with him. We just got each other. 

Our 2nd act was when we both discovered a love/hate relationship with golf (now, I full-on hate the game). We were both working adults when we found that love for it, though neither of us were that good. Full transparency, he's probably looking down and telling me to speak for myself! We were in our early 30s and would convene most Sunday's at a little 9-hole course in Zionsville, sometimes going around twice. We'd bring cigars and have a peaceful, quiet morning together. Though Don would sometimes curse a golf shot, through it all, the 2nd act of our friendship was just as unique and fun as the first—but more relaxing than spending 10 hours in a hot kitchen on a Saturday night, together!

I was amazed when I heard about Don's passing. Too, too young. Though we'd lost touch over the years, I know that he was dedicated to his family, old friends, new friends, and strangers. And, I am comforted knowing he was involved with his church— a church I'd also attended growing up. He will be missed by many, and may God rest his lovely soul.

I worked with Don at Simon.  I called him my buddy.  He welcomed me onto the 11th floor immediately and always had time to answer my questions and was patient in explaining all things financial.  I'll miss walking around the corner to visit his office and hearing his warm laugh and friendly smile.  My deepest sympathies to his family.

To the family of Don,

I know Don from working at Simon, my condolences go out to the family and friends.  I want to encourage your hearts to allow the peace of God to comfort you and strengthen you during this difficult time. In the word of God, John 14:27 say Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.  God is with you every step of the way. Please know that my prayers are with you all.  God Bless

The news you were no longer here devastated by everyone!
So shocked!
So sudden!
Your passing left a big hole in each and every one of us!
I just wish you knew how much you and your quiet dedication were appreciated; How much I appreciated you never ignored my requests for help, my emails, etc. no matter how busy you were! 
The way you worked. The way you carried yourself, made you the one and only Don Merrick we knew and respected.
Your sudden passing made every one pause, slow down, and think about priorities in their lives…. It made everyone kinder, nicer towards one another. Even when you were gone, you still made a positive impact, Don!

Don hired me at Simon almost 30 years ago.  While I was only his direct report for 3 months, I learned so much from him in that short time.  I thoroughly enjoyed working with him over this lifetime, and he certainly had my utmost respect.  He will absolutely be missed.  The family will be in my prayers during this difficult time and beyond.

Don was a giving and caring man. Always ready to volunteer for activities for the benefit of others.  I knew Don for 30+ years and stayed in contact until I moved to Michigan.  He will be missed by all who knew him. God bless Don and his family
