John (Jack) Sales, 86 years old, of Carmel, Indiana, passed away on Saturday, October 7th, 2023 in hospice at St. Vincent Hospital in Carmel. Jack was born on Monday, October 4th, 1937 in Saginaw, Michigan to parents Ann and Clarence Sales. He and his loving wife, Beth Sales, resided at Independence Villages of Carmel for the past few months.
In 1960, Jack graduated from Butler University with a degree in journalism. While attending university he was the co-editor of the 1959 yearbook, Drift. He was managing editor, city editor, and business manager of Collegian, the college newspaper. Over the years he served as the VP and treasurer of the student council. He was VP of the Newman Club. He was also a member of the Interfraternity Council, YMCA, Sphinx, Blue Key and the Religious Council. He served as President and VP of Phi Kappa Theta and VP of Sigma Delta Chi.
For 40 years, Jack worked for the Indianapolis Star & News, retiring in 1999, as the Assistant Managing Editor. After retiring he stayed active working as an interpreter at Conner Prairie and as Copy Editor for the Indianapolis Recorder.
Jack was a member of the Carmel Lions Club, where he service as President. He was an Elder at Carmel Christian Church and Christ United Methodist Church in Westfield. He and his family have lived in the Carmel/Westfield area for 56 years.
Jack is survived by many members of his loving family. He wife of 62 years, Beth, His two sons Tony (Cindy) Sales and Andrew (Shari Gosselin) Sales, his daughter Peggy Sales, sister Elizabeth Sales, grandchildren Sophia Sales & Blake Sales; and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by both his parents and brother Arthur Sales.
Visitation for Jack will be held on Friday, November 10, 2023 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Leppert Mortuary-Carmel, located at 900 North Rangeline Road in Carmel, IN. The memorial service will begin at 7:00 pm.
