Phillip Jan Deering, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away surrounded by love and family. Born to Milton and Ruth (Phillips) Deering, Jan lived a life marked by hard work, fierce loyalty, and deep love. A self-made man and exceptional athlete, Jan’s passion for sports—especially baseball—was matched only by his devotion to those he held dear.
Jan was a fierce defender of his family and friends, loving with every ounce of his being. His pride and joy were his five grandchildren, and he often said how grateful he was to witness each of them graduate from college. He shared with his children and grandchildren a love of adventure and travel, creating cherished memories like their trip to the Grand Canyon in his motor home—revisiting the same trails he once walked with his own children, famously descending to the bottom in loafers and a cigarette in hand. One of Jans's most cherished adventures was his time spent at the iconic Indy 500. He took his children, even having to tie them to the stands so they didn’t fall, and then gave some of his grandchildren the love of racing. No one could forget his famous phrase, “isn’t that right Linda?”, which she would always agree with and then tell the facts later.
Jan and his wife Linda owned and operated Deering Cleaners in Noblesville for over 20 years, a business later carried on by his special nephew Greg and Cherie Wilson, who continued the legacy for another two decades.
He was a man of wisdom and humility, often reminding his children, “Never get too big to say ‘I love you’ or get down on your knees and pray.” Flaws and all, he was truly the best dad a child could have.
Jan was preceded in death by his parents Milton and Ruth Deering; his in-laws Cedric and Alice (Carey) Foland; and his brothers James, Bob, David, Milt, Ben, and John. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Linda (Foland) Deering; sons Mike, Ron (Bess), and Shane; daughter Shelly (David) Menard; grandchildren JP (Subhan Cheema), Sam Deering, Luc, Riley, and Ryan Menard.
He is also survived by brothers Dick and Matt (Jeanne) Deering; sisters Lana (Bill) Wilson, Nancy Bond, Linda (Vic) Miller, and Debbie (Thom) Miller; and many nieces and nephews, each holding a special place in his heart.
Jan’s legacy lives on in the laughter, love, and stories shared by those who knew him. In the days ahead, there will be many tears and many smiles as we remember a man who gave everything he had to the people he loved.
In lieu of flowers, contribution is Jan’s memory may be made to your local humane society or animal shelter.
