Janet Sue Tyner, 83, of Westfield, formerly of Carmel, passed away September 21, 2026, surrounded by her family. Janet was born on November 4, 1943, in Fort Wayne, IN to the late Vester and Thelma (Hedge) Wheat.
Janet grew up in Lebanon, Indiana where she was active in sports and cheerleading. She went on to graduate from Purdue University where she met the love of her life, Bill through his sister Betty at Shoemaker Coop. She earned her master’s degree from Butler University.
Janet lived a life centered on faith, family, service, travel, and adventure. She dedicated her life to being everyone’s cheerleader. She was a loving mother, wife, grandmother, aunt, friend, leader, educator, and faithful servant of God. Janet touched countless lives through her work as a teacher, YMCA director, swim coach, and Girl Scout Leader.
Janet enjoyed a wide variety of interests and activities, was very athletic, growing up boating, skiing, and camping in the states. After retirement Janet and Bill were fortunate to be able to travel globally with friends and family making memories together. Janet loved shopping, antiquing, playing games and puzzles. She participated in and enjoyed Bible study, church activities, BSF, book clubs, home economics club, and spending cherished time with family and friends.
Janet was most at peace spending time at the river or at the beach.
Janet is survived by her husband of 60 years, Wilbur “Bill” Tyner, Jr.; daughters, Laura (Rupert) Boneham and Tricia (Ty) Miller; grandchildren, Raya Boneham, Tristan Emery, and Trace Miller; and niece, Carly Johnstone. In addition to her parents, Janet was preceded in death by sisters, Cheryl Gowan and Deborah Sparks.
A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, September 28, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Eagle Creek Evangelical Friends Church, 18325 Eagletown Rd., Westfield, Indiana. Visitation will be prior to the service also at the church beginning at 11:00 AM. Burial to follow at Union Chapel Cemetery, Indianapolis, Indiana.
