Obituary of Jeffrey Charles Houtteman
Jeffrey Charles Houtteman, 64, of Westfield, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, September 2, 2020. Jeff was born December 30, 1955 in Birmingham, MI, to Arthur and Shelagh Houtteman. He was born at home and entered the world with great fanfare as noted the following day in The Detroit Times. NFL great Leon Hart and proud dad, MLB pitcher Art were the skillful delivery men when Jeff, without much warning to mom Shelagh, made his entrance. (It was probably the only time his dad played catcher.) Like his parents, Jeff excelled at sports. He was an excellent swimmer, holding a state record while in high school. Jeff spent summers in New Jersey with his cousins Rusty and Michael. They were always welcomed at community swim meets and baseball games. His father knew Jeff’s baseball skills could take him pro, and even Sparky Anderson tried to convince him to pursue it, but Jeff’s passions were elsewhere. Jeff loved the water, outdoors, and travelling - especially to Northern Michigan. Golfing, boating, fishing, skiing (water and snow), snowmobiling, and camping were Jeff’s favorite activities. In line with his patriotism, Jeff’s 4th of July firework shows were HUGE. In the last several years, Princess Cruises with friends became their favorite vacations. Jeff never passed on a challenge to fix or improve something. He was the go-to neighbor for a tool, a fix, or advice. Trans Ams were a true passion. He participated in area car shows and the Annual Woodward Dream Cruise in Michigan as well. While Jeff enjoyed an old western movie, he was happiest making memories with his family and friends. He was a true conversationalist and loved learning other’s stories over bourbon or margaritas. Outgoing and affable, Jeff had a successful career in sales: automotive and commercial steel industries. He owned and operated Coverall in the Indianapolis area for almost 20 years before retiring. Jeff is survived by his beloved wife of 21 years, Lynne; their loving son, Matthew; his dear mother, Shelagh Houtteman; sisters, Holly Niec and Sharon Wipperman; nieces and nephew, Georgie, Stephanie, Jessica, Chad and Kelly; and in laws, Pat, Anne, Mike, and Lee. His devoted dog, Comet, was always by his side. Jeff was preceded in death by his father Art Houtteman and sister Sheryl Houtteman. Jeff had many lifelong friends from childhood, high school, neighbors and along life’s road that he truly treasured. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, September 24th, 2020, at 11:00AM at Our Lady of Mount Carmel (14598 Oak Ridge Road, Carmel, IN, 46032). We understand that not everyone will be able to attend. We will live-stream the Mass. Jeff’s final resting place will be in Michigan. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested in Jeff’s name to: Merciful Help Center (1045 West 146th Street, Suite A, Carmel, IN, 46032) or Catholic Radio Indy (catholicradioindy.org). “Until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand.” Online condolences are available at: www.leppertmortuary.com
