Obituary of John S. Kirby III
John S. Kirby III (Sr.) of Carmel, IN passed away on November 5, 2021 after years of struggling with an ongoing illness. John was born on July 24th of 1926 in Urbana, OH but lived the majority of his life in central Indiana. He graduated from Shortridge High School and then from Indiana University with a degree in business. As a businessman, he owned and managed a few small companies over the years culminating in Kirby Realty Group, a Carmel based commercial property management company. John and his late wife, Jean, were avid boaters, licensed pilots, coworkers and travel partners around the world for almost 50 years. John married Jean on May 26, 1962 in Indianapolis and enjoyed each others company until Jean’s death on November 14, 2011. John was in the Navy and served on the aircraft carrier USS Kearsarge in World War II. He was fortunate to be invited to experience a veteran’s Honor Flight to Washington DC several years ago. John was preceded in death by his wife Jean Hummermeier Kirby, father John S. Kirby II, mother Helen Mumper Kirby, step-mother Martha Kirby, and brothers Bob Kirby and Tom Kirby. He is survived by his sons Chris C. Kirby and John S. Kirby IV, his significant other Gerry Newkirk, and grandchildren, Mary (Katy) Kirby, Philip Kirby, Jennifer Kirby, Jenna Cantrell and other nieces and nephews. Visitation for John will be held Friday, November 12, 2021 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Leppert Mortuaries – Carmel, 900 N. Rangeline Rd., Carmel, Indiana 46032. John will be laid to rest in Oakdale Cemetery, Urbana, Ohio at 2pm on Saturday, November 13th.
