Larry Alan Byerly, 69, of Noblesville, passed away on May 13, 2026. He was born on May 5, 1957, in Indianapolis to Lawrence Ellsworth and Julia Ann (McConnell) Byerly. He was baptized at Castleton United Methodist Church and graduated from Lawrence Central High School in 1976. After high school, Larry worked as an orderly at the Wishard Hospital emergency room while training to become an EMT. He earned his EMT certification and subsequently became a certified paramedic in 1984. Throughout his career, Larry was held in high regard by the local paramedic community.
Larry was a kind and generous soul who cherished time with his family above all else. He was a proud and devoted grandfather who rarely missed an opportunity to cheer on one of his six beloved grandchildren. He was the type of guy who was the first to step up to help a friend in need. He could always find a way to stay busy and could fix almost anything. He especially enjoyed repairing small engines and lawnmowers. Larry loved all things outdoors and had many tales of his favorite fishing spots (including several in Canada), ski trips to Colorado, and countless rounds of golf.
Larry served the communities of Lawrence and Indianapolis as a paramedic and firefighter for 40 years, most recently at IFD Station 17. He was a proud member of Indiana Task Force 1 and answered the call to help with recovery efforts following the attacks of September 11, 2001. His death was ultimately a result of his fearless, faithful and unselfish service at Ground Zero. Larry’s accolades from Lawrence Township Fire Department include Firefighter of the Year in 2002 and Certificates of Commendation in 2001 and 2003. He was a dedicated member of Indianapolis Professional Firefighters Local 416. He was also a Master Mason at Castleton Lodge #251 F&AM.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Debbi Byerly; his children, Sara (Jeff) Hastings, Jeremy (Margot) Edwards, David (Kirsten) Edwards, and Christopher (Sylvia) Byerly; six grandchildren, Gabe, Delilah, George, Julia, Everett and Patrissa; siblings Jerry (Anne) Byerly, Dan (Rachelle) Byerly, Tom (Carol) Byerly, Jim (Kathy) Byerly, Lynne (Dave) Cheslyn, Roy (Jenny) Byerly, and Jennifer (Chris) Mosier; numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of lifelong friends and brothers and sisters in the fire family.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, his twin sister Mary Cashen, and his brother-in-law Paul Cashen.
Visitation for Larry will be from 10 am - 12 pm on Thursday, May 21, at Castleton United Methodist Church (7101 Shadeland Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46250) followed by a funeral service beginning at 12 pm in the church sanctuary. Interment follows with full IFD Honors at Carmel Cemetery in Carmel, Indiana.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Larry’s name are suggested to L416 Bereavement Fund (748 Massachusetts Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46204) which supports surviving loved ones of those who perish in the line of duty. Online condolences available at www.leppertmortuary.com
