Orville Edwin Bose, 83, of Carmel, Indiana departed this life Friday, July 9, 2021 at his home surrounded by his family. Orville was born March 4, 1938 in Hymera, Indiana to the late Floyd Eugene and Rachael Jane (Walters) Bose. He was raised in Sullivan County and learned to play basketball at a young age.

Upon graduation from Hymera High School, where Orville had an outstanding basketball career, he was welcomed to Butler University and the basketball team by legendary Coach Tony Hinkle. He represented Butler in the 1958 and 1959 NIT Tournament. Orville’s passion for basketball culminated with his induction into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 2019.

Orville graduated from Butler in 1960 with a degree in education. He then furthered his studies at Indiana University earning a master’s and specialist degree in education and administration. For over 35 years, Orville served in the Indiana School Systems, including North Vernon, North Vermillion, and Fairfield. He worked in various roles, including teacher-coach, principal, and superintendent. As an exceptional teacher, coach, and administrator, he challenged his students to be their best in all of their endeavors. Orville was a kind and gentle soul who put his faith and family first in all that he did. He was a longtime and dedicated member of North Central Church of Christ. He enjoyed playing golf, fishing and morning coffee with friends. He was happiest though, and never missed an opportunity, to make a memory with his family and grandchildren.

Orville was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Mark Phillips; siblings, Dennis Bose, Rosalie Gabbard, Connie Asbury and infant brother, William Bose. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Dixie Bose; his devoted daughters, Michelle (Gary) Nead, Nancy Phillips and Teresa (David) Smith; his grandchildren, Michael & Matthew Nead, Kyle & Mackenzie Phillips and Chloe & Caitlyn Smith and great-grandchildren.

Visitation for Orville will begin at 10:00 am on Saturday, July 17th at North Central Church of Christ and conclude at time of service beginning at 11:00 am. Memorial contribution are suggested in Orville’s name to: the American Cancer Society and Shults-Lewis Child & Family Services.

Orville is one of the nicest individuals I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. He’s also one of two people (Dale Goddard is the other) I’ve known from Hymera, IN.
We had many discussions about basketball: his time in North Vernon, IN and his election to the Indiana High School Basketball Hall of Fame.
He was a good Christian man!
He will be missed!

During the years that I served on the ministry staff at North Central Church of Christ, I always enjoyed having a chance to chat with Orville. He was invariably smiling and positive and was a joy to spend time with. Also, when he and Dixie returned from winter trips to Texas, he always had some good "fishing pictures" to show me. He was a good, humble, gentle Christian man through-and-through. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
God's grace and comfort to the whole family in your time of saying goodbye. By the grace of God in Jesus, we will see him again soon.

Orville was my first roommate at Butler University. He was an excellent basketball player and a wonderful friend for 65 years. I am thankful that I had many opportunities to speak with him in the last few years. The best thing I can say about Orville is that he was a Christian. 27.8. Ken Pennington

So sorry to hear of your loss. Orville touched so many lives during his years at Fairfield. He was a great man of faith, and everyone knew that. I enjoyed chatting with him a few times when my sister lived only a few houses away from his in Carmel. He'll be missed.

A man of Faith. He is in good hands. I knew Orville the last 50 years of his life. I had a great conversation with him about 2 weeks ago and he was ready for the next great adventure. He never mentioned his high school basketball experience. I never knew about his success until he was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame. He was always eager to talk about his family and their accomplishments. I know GOD will be with his family and they will receive his comfort.

Prayers to family. Orville was a great leader, administrator, counselor and teacher. But most of all, he was a great family man and a godly person. RIP my friend.
