Philip Douglas Hilger, 80, of Carmel, Indiana, passed away on June 28, 2026. Born on May 15, 1946, in Coldwater, Ohio, Phil lived a full life marked by hard work, generosity, humor, and deep love for his family and friends.
Phil spent his early years in Coldwater until the passing of his father, Charles John Hilger. He then moved with his mother, LuCretia Marie Hilger, and siblings Gregg (Patricia) and Brenda to Bloomington, Indiana. He graduated from University High School in Bloomington and attended Indiana University before being drafted into the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam era.
He married his high school sweetheart, Jean Ann Farr, and together they raised three children: Julianna, Charles (Chukk), and Jennifer. Phil later married the love of his life, Diana Jo Adams, who brought two daughters, Rachel and Alissa, into his heart and home. They built a cherished family home in Pendleton after living in Anderson, a spacious house with a pool that became a beloved gathering place for family and friends.
Phil was a gracious host who loved preparing delicious meals for everyone. Professionally, Phil made his mark at Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis, where his business acumen and tireless work ethic earned him the nickname “the million dollar man” for helping turn the public hospital into a profitable operation. He approached every task with dedication and skill.
Phil had many passions that brought him joy. He loved to travel and was especially fond of the memorable cruise he and Diane took around Italy, where they soaked in the scenery, food, wine, and culture. An avid photographer, he also enjoyed music of all kinds—from The Ventures’ surf instrumentals and Alabama to Neil Diamond and smooth jazz. He was a talented cook whose meals were legendary; as his family often noted, they were nearly impossible to recreate because “the first time was always the best.”
Above all, Phil was a helper and nurturer. If someone needed anything—repairs, advice, or support—Phil was the person they called. He volunteered at Riverview Hospital and assisted library patrons with tax preparation after retirement. A skilled handyman who could fix almost anything, he was also a notorious prankster, delighting in surprises like stocking a neighbor’s pool with catfish or placing an unbreakable chalk egg in the refrigerator.
As a father, he taught his children to dream big, work hard, be independent, and care for others. He instilled in them the confidence to tackle any challenge. He was overjoyed by his grandchildren—Lauren and Katelyn Burke, and Jackson Mrozinski and nothing lit up his face more than time spent with them, whether on trips or at home.
Phil was preceded in death by his father, Charles John Hilger; his mother, LuCretia Marie Hilger; his aunt, Susie Marie Fosler; his son, Charles Philip Hilger; his wife, Diana Jo Adams; and his brother, J. Gregg Hilger.
He is survived by his children Julianna, Jennifer (Brooke), and stepdaughters Rachel and Alissa, his sister Brenda, his grandchildren, and many other loving family members and friends whose lives he touched with his kindness, humor, and generosity.
Phil’s legacy lives on in the lessons he taught, the memories he created, and the love he so freely gave. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
