Annamma Daniel Chacko

Anna was born in Mezhuveli, Kerala, India, on July 2, 1941, the sixth of seven children to Daniel Yohannan and Aleyamma Daniel. As a young woman, she left home to attend nursing school, pursuing a career to care for others and provide for her family.

After completing her nursing education in India, Anna lived in Dubai before immigrating to the United States in 1968. She first settled in Maryland, where she continued her nursing studies. That same year, in July, she married Rev. K.C. Chacko. They shared 36 years of marriage until his death on August 2, 2004.

Anna spent over 30 years as a nurse at Parkland Hospital, where she worked in the burn unit including being a charge nurse. She retired from Parkland in 2005.

She was independent, disciplined, strong-willed, and deeply rooted in her Pentecostal Christian faith. She was warm and always kind to those she met. Those who knew her best also knew her strong opinions and her willingness to say exactly what was on her mind.

Family, faith, and providing for those around her were recurring themes throughout Anna’s life. She helped relatives establish lives in the United States and regularly opened her home to visiting family members and pastors. She was deeply respected and loved by the relatives whose lives she touched.

Anna was well known for her remarkable cooking and could prepare elaborate meals for gatherings of 50 or more. Her family particularly remembers her beef fry, chicken curry, egg curry, and her many vegetable thorans.

Anna also enjoyed gardening - always growing okra, bitter melon, and beans to share with the family - and keeping up with the news. She made many trips to Chicago over the years to spend time with family and also traveled on her own to the Holy Land, a trip that reflected both her independence and her faith.

For 34 years, Anna was part of the Victory Assembly church community. She read her Bible daily and prayed regularly for her family and their spiritual lives. Psalm 27:4 was especially meaningful to her.

Since December of 2023, Anna lived at Discovery Village, where she remained active well into her eighties, enjoying walking and participating in community activities.

Anna was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. K.C. Chacko; her parents, Daniel Yohannan and Aleyamma Daniel; and her six siblings, George, Abraham, Mariamma, Thomas, Kunjamma, and Pennamma.

She is survived by her daughter, Anita Patel, and her son-in-law, Nayan Patel; her son, Benjamin Chacko, and daughter-in-law, Marisa Chacko; and her granddaughters, Sonia Patel and Kareena Patel.

From Kerala to Dubai and ultimately to the United States, Anna built a life through persistence and hard work. She will be remembered for her strong will, her faith, her cooking, her candid nature, and the many years she spent providing for her family.
