Born in Vietnam on May 12, 1950, Nguyen Dinh Xit was the sixth of eleven children. His parents decided to name their children using French numerals according to their birth order. Being the sixth child, he was named after the French word “Six”, phonetically written in Vietnamese as “Xit.”
Xit was a tremendous man with a huge personality that lit up any room he entered. Although he contracted polio at a young age, it did not stop him from living a full and blessed life. He developed incredibly strong hands and became a skilled carpenter. In his vocation, it is known that he could build almost anything out of wood.
Xit married his hometown sweetheart and love of his life, Bui Thi Huong, a beautiful girl who lived a few houses down the street in Hoi Nai, Vietnam. Their love was unified with a shared dream of having a family together, so they risked it all for a better life in America.
They escaped Vietnam with their two small children (Whitney and Tien) as boat refugees in 1982. Although moving to a new country with a new language was extremely challenging, Xit was industrious and creative, holding many jobs to support his family. He eventually landed a job at Manheim Weitz, a high end furniture store in Dallas. From there, Xit and his beloved wife Huong were able to carve out a life in Carrollton, Texas, learn English, and have two additional children (Long and Xuan).
They became US Citizens in 1987 and legally changed their names to become Daniel Nguyen and Janet Nguyen.
With his larger than life personality and trademark unstoppable mentality, Daniel taught himself upholstery skills with an eye towards being a small business owner. With his brother Set, he was able to take a leap of faith and they opened their first business, Andy’s Upholstery, in 1994. Their tenacity paid off and it allowed Daniel and Janet to enroll their four children into four different Texas universities. In 2003 the business was renamed as Addison Upholstery and thirty years later, is still being operated by Daniel’s wife and their son, Long.
Nothing brought him more joy than to spend time with his family and tend to his koi fish and backyard, affectionately known as ‘The Vietnamese Paradise.’ He had a renowned green thumb and his orchids continue to bloom every year. He was well loved and fortunate to have most of his extended family as neighbors. He was also an active member of the Vietnamese Catholic community at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish.
Thank you for coming here to celebrate this beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, parish member and friend who strived to enrich everyone’s life with his generosity, smile, and zest for life. Daniel is survived by his cherished wife Janet Nguyen, four children (Whitney Huynh, Tien Nguyen, Long Nguyen and Minh Xuan Nguyen) and two adored grandchildren (Aston Huynh and Pierce Huynh).
