Mrs. Ethel Hoak Slater, age 97, of Farmers Branch, Texas passed away on Wednesday March 21, 2018. Ethel was born April 5, 1920 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Ethel graduated from Aspinwall High School in Aspinwall, Pennsylvania. She was married to Robert F. Slater on July 27, 1944 when he was home on leave from the U.S. Army. They honeymooned at Cook Forest State Park near Clarion, Pennsylvania which was one of their favorite places to visit. Ethel was a secretary in the Fox Chapel Area School System for many years and they lived in O’Hara Twp. on Powers Run Road.
Ethel had a passion for flowers, birds and nature in general. The arrival of spring with its wildflowers was her favorite time of year and she loved walking in the woods to see and smell them. Trillium Trail in Fox Chapel was her most favorite place to enjoy nature.
She was survived by two children Stephanie (Slater) Varnum of Farmers Branch, Texas and R. Michael Slater of Mohnton. Pennsylvania. She was also survived by two grandchildren Christopher Varnum of Fort Worth Texas and Sharon (Varnum) Mersiovsky of Little Elm, Texas and six great-grandchildren Jonathan, Jaimie, Brooke and Christian Varnum and Katie and Sean Mersiovsky.
She was preceded in death by her Husband of 57 years Robert F. Slater, her parents John H. Hoak and Emma (Gaenzle) Hoak of Aspinwall Pennsylvania and her sisters and brother Louise Henderson, Elizabeth Kurtz, Rosemary Hoak, John H. Hoak Jr., Martha Vaughn and Lois Hoffman.
