Mr. Malayil Chacko Varghese (also known to many as Joychayan) was born on September 29th, 1931 to parents Gee Varghese Chacko and Mariyamma Chacko in Vennikulam, Thiruvalla, Kerala, India. He was the oldest of six children with siblings: Malayil Chacko Kurivilla, Mathews Chacko Malayil, Chacko Joseph, Elizabeth Chacko, and Chacko Thomas. He attended St Johns English High School from 1947 to 1950 and The Institute of Technology to study Civil Engineering from 1950 to 1951. This set the foundations for a lifetime career in Civil Engineering.
MC Varghese migrated to Singapore at the age of 20. He never forgot and always remained grateful to Maliakkil Mathews (and family), Puthencavu, Chengannur for their sponsorship and kindness in arranging his immigration to Singapore. There he worked for the British Government in Civil Engineering and automatically obtained a British Citizenship. After a short period in Singapore, he travelled to India and married his loving wife, Ammini of Elanthoor, Pariyaram, Kerala on February 5th, 1959. Subsequently, they went on to have four children: Jose Chacko Varghese, Johnson Varghese, James Abraham Varghese and Mary Gould. While in Singapore he was in a serious car accident that caused him to be in a coma for several days. This event radically altered his outlook on life.
He always considered this to be a second chance to glorify God through his life.
In 1968, MC Varghese returned to Kerala with his family to start a new life. He built a new home in Vennikulum and settled the children in school. However, after few years in Kerala, in 1971 he felt the need to move again for economic and professional reasons, this time to England. There he lived, worked and worshipped. He was the member of Hounslow Pentecostal Church where he was much loved and served as a deacon. After retirement, he moved to the United States in 2001 to be with his children. He enjoyed his ‘golden days’ spending time with his family and friends, studying the Bible and being part of the community. His final residence was at Flower Mound, TX where he died peacefully at home on Sunday, September 7th 2014, at the age of 83.
He is survived by his wife (Ammini Varghese), his children (Jose Chacko Varghese, Johnson Varghese, James Abraham Varghese and Mary Varghese and their spouses), his siblings (Malayil Chacko Kurivilla, Mathews Chacko Malayil, Chacko Joseph, Elizabeth Chacko and Chacko Thomas), and his grandchildren (Jonathan Abraham Varghese, Mathew James Varghese, Joshua Johnson Varghese, Lauren Nicole Varghese, Joshua James Varghese, Joshua Paul Moses, Alexander Linus Moses, Christian Aaron Gould, Caleb Nicholaus Gould and Gabrielle Olivia Gould.
