Obituary of Marlene Wutzke Eastman
IN THE CARE OF

Rhoton Funeral Home

Marlene Wutzke Eastman, 92, of Sun City West, Arizona passed away peacefully at home on Friday, May 22, 2026, after a short illness. Private services will be held at Roselawn Memorial Park in Texas.

Marlene was born in 1933 as the first child of Helmuth and Ella Mae Wutzke. She developed a deep fondness for outdoor pursuits and frequently accompanied her father in activities such as fishing, hunting, and mushroom foraging, as well as observing and admiring his skill in carpentry.

Marlene graduated from Lincoln High School in Vinton, Iowa, in 1951. Following her graduation and completion of the business secretary curriculum, she was employed as the secretary to the superintendent of schools in Vinton. In 1955, she married Bob, her high school sweetheart and the son of Harry Eastman, the superintendent for whom she had worked.

Marlene attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, graduating in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science in Vocational Home Economics and minors in Social Studies and General Science. She and Bob were married in August 1955, the day after he received his Navy commission.

Marlene pursued a career in education, beginning her work as a teacher. While living in Guam, she taught sewing classes. She later earned her master’s degree in Learning Disabilities from Mankato State University in 1986, graduating with a 3.9 grade point average and becoming a member of Phi Delta Kappa. She completed practicums in both learning disabilities and behavioral disabilities, qualifying her to teach multi categorical classes—serving students with learning, behavioral, and intellectual disabilities—in Iowa, grades K–12.

Retiring to Sun City West in June 1995, Marlene embraced her creativity and learned to weave placemats, mug mats, table runners, dishcloths, wall hangings, and small throw rugs in a wide variety of patterns and yarns. She also developed a strong interest in beading, creating bracelets, earrings, and necklaces using numerous designs and bead sizes. Marlene remained active in her community, hosting neighborhood Halloween parties, participating in church activities, and enjoying regular games of bridge.

In August 2025, Marlene and Bob celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary, marking 75 years together. Marlene shared Bob’s adventurous spirit and carried with her many remarkable stories from their experiences. She took great pride in her family, demonstrated through the extensive genealogy she researched, and she embraced life with joy and gratitude.

She will be remembered by her son, daughter, daughter in law, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Marlene was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Fred and Robert; her husband, Robert; and her son, Rob.
