OBITUARY

Melba Mae Curtis Chapman

October 10, 1925April 3, 2011

Melba Chapman was born on October 10, 1925, in Haynesville, LA, to W.A. and Eula B. Curtis. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Lorena Bradford and brothers Ted and W.A. Curtis, Jr. and by her daughter, Marthalyn. Melba is survived by daughter Suzanne Wilsey of Gainesville, FL, and daughters and sons-in-law Kathleen and Don Chandler of Bethany, OK; and Jeannine and John Hollon of Carrollton, TX. Melba is also survived by grandchildren Curt Coffman of Oklahoma City, OK; Sarah Coffman of Brooklyn, NY; Jenny Coffman Witherspoon and husband Ryan of Oklahoma City, OK; Michael Coffman of Oklahoma City, OK: Chase Chandler and wife Allison of Simi Valley, CA; Clint Chandler of Oklahoma City, OK; Samantha Hollon of Burbank, CA; Alyson Hollon of Richardson, TX; and Jonathan Hollon and wife Shelly of Watauga, TX, as well as great-grandchildren Carsten Coffman, Cohen Coffman, Teegin Coffman, Adelynne Witherspoon, Blue Chandler, Kyla Chandler, and Elizabeth Hollon.

Melba was a devoted mother who taught her daughters always to put God first in their lives. She was truly a virtuous and phenomenal woman, singly and successfully raising three independent daughters at a difficult time when others showed little compassion or understanding for a Christian woman who happened to be divorced. She leaned heavily on God for guidance in every phase of her life. Among our many wonderful memories are her sharp sense of humor, her unique ability to create words that no one had ever heard before, her fierce protection of and loyalty to family and friends, as well as the many sacrifices she made so that her daughters would have opportunities in life that she never had. Her legacy still continues three generations later. Melba worked at Republic National Bank in Dallas, the Southern Baptist Annuity Board, Dresser Industries, and retired as a service representative after many years at Aetna Life and Casualty.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to PT Cruzers c/o Webb Chapel church of Christ, 13425 Webb Chapel Road, Farmers Branch, TX 75234 or to the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, 2222 Welborn Street, Dallas, TX 75219.

Melba,
Every time I have bisquits and gravy
I will think of you.

Granny, you were the best and strongest woman I think may ever have lived. I won't miss you trying to trick us into eating your Weight Watcher's mayonnaise on our sandwiches, but I will miss the way you laughed, your strong opinions, eating with you at Whataburger and El Fenix, and hanging out with you all these years. You were the best Granny a kid could ask for. Thank you for everything you've done for me and for your great example. I love you.
