Biography

Born in 1922 as Nguyen Van Cuu, he would later change his name to Peter Vinhcuu after he became a US citizen. Peter Vinhcuu was born in Son Tay, Vietnam into a very religious family to parents, Nguyen Van Khai and Nguyen Thi Hanh. From a young age, he was a compassionate person, a quality that he would carry with him throughout his life, and as a child, he worked hard to please his parents and live up to their expectations, all the while striving to live a godly life.

Throughout his life, Vinhcuu showed a remarkable ability to brighten up the lives of those around him. Vinhcuu was caring, gentle and mild-mannered. He was raised with eight siblings. He had 6 sisters, Nguyen Thi Thu, Nguyen Thi Xuan, Nguyen Thi Nam, Nguyen Thi Sau, Nguyen Thi Bay, Nguyen Thi Tam, one brother, Nguyen Dinh Pham, and one adopted brother, Nguyen Hung. Vinhcuu was constantly involved in activities with his brothers and sisters and he and his siblings cared deeply for one another.

When he grew older, Peter Vinhcuu would find his match in Nguyen Thi Hue. They were wed in the 1940s and Vinhcuu cared passionately for Hue, his wife. His faith, deep loyalty, and a strong commitment to his vows brought a sense of completeness to their marriage that would last their entire lives. Vinhcuu proved to be a caring father who wanted the best for his children and he and Hue made great efforts to raise all of their children to know and live in the light and righteousness of God. Peter Vinhcuu and Nguyen Thi Hue were blessed with five surviving children: fours sons, Nguyen Xuan Hoang, Nguyen Trong Thien, Nguyen Trong Hiep, and Nguyen Xuan Doan, and one daughter, Nguyen Ngoc Dung Cecilia. Later in life, they were also blessed with fourteen grandchildren, Diem, Kim, Jackie, Tony, Michael, David, Lynda, Hung, Hau, Khoi, Kien, Lily, Mai-Lan, and Nicholas.

In 1954, Peter Vinhcuu's entire family migrated to South Vietnam. Unfortunately, he could not join his family at that time; he had been imprisoned by the Viet Minh army. He had served in the French Army and by the Grace of God and through his unshakable faith and prayers, he eventually rejoined his family in South Vietnam after the intervention of the French Army. For much of his time in Vietnam, he was heavily involved in the Catholic Church and helped the priests manage the parish and community, often leading the prayers during mass.

In 1978, he and his family sought escape from Vietnam and endeavored on a journey to find freedom from communism and religious persecution. During their escape attempt, the Taiwanese Army rescued them and they eventually made it to a refugee camp. Life was hard in the camp but a strong faith in God pulled him and his family through these tough times. In 1978, his sons made it to the United States and in 1980, Peter Vinhcuu was reunited with his family and friends. In the US, Peter Vinhcuu took all of his personal and moral obligations seriously and was a strong defender of his faith. He was a member of St. Anthony's for 25 years in Milwaukee, WI, and when he moved to Texas, he was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus for 5+ years. He also brought joy to everyone around him and he could often be found smiling a smile that could brighten up anyone's mood.

In his golden years, he enjoyed his leisure time by taking part in various hobbies. His favorite pursuits were taking long walks, appreciating nature and animals, and collecting knick knacks and various gadgets, and occasionally enjoying a Greenbay Packers game. Vinhcuu was content to enjoy his hobbies alone but he was also willing to share his interests with others. Vinhcuu enjoyed traveling and going away on vacations. Taking trips provided the chance for him to kick back and relax, to visit new places and see new things. Favorite vacations included a family cruise trip and visits to his family and friends all over the world.

Peter Vinhcuu lived a full life and passed away on March 7, 2019 at home, surrounded by loving family members. He is survived by his sisters, Nguyen Thi Sau and Nguyen Thi Tam, his children, Hoang, Thien, Hiep, Cecilia Dung, and Doan, and his many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Throughout his life, he remained a devout Catholic and he taught his children to trust and leave all things to God. His devotion and dedication to his faith is an inspiration and will continue to live on in his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He will be laid to rest in Earthman Resthaven in Houston, TX. May God Bless his soul and may he rest in peace in Heaven with our beloved Nguyen Thi Hue, who passed before him and all of the saints.
