Brad was born on December 18, 1968, in Truckee, California. His early life was marked by great loss—his mother, Dorothy Lee Withrow, passed away when he was just nine months old, and his father, Fred T. Hays, died while serving in Vietnam. Despite these hardships, Brad was raised with love by Earl William Withrow and Vera Kay Withrow. He grew up alongside his beloved brother, Bill Withrow. After his grandparents' passing during his high school years, Brad went to live with Mike Shaw—his best friend since seventh grade—who became like a brother and would later serve beside him in the Army.
Brad had a joyful and wild-hearted childhood. He made lasting memories and plenty of mischief with his friends during his school years. That adventurous spirit carried into adulthood, where he proudly served in the U.S. Army. Brad served in Alpha Company, 3rd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment Wolfhounds. Stationed with the 7th Infantry Division out of Fort Ord, California. He saw combat during Operation Just Cause in Panama 1989, a campaign in which he deployed once. He was deployed a second time for JOTC, Jungle Operation Training in 1991, Stationed at Ft. Sherman, Panama trademarked “Green Hell”. He was a highly trained jungle and light fighter and took immense pride in his service.
During his military service, Brad earned numerous honors, including:
• Army Service Ribbon
• Expert Infantry Badge
• Combat Infantry Badge
• Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Operation Just Cause)
• Army Good Conduct Medal (1st Award)
• Infantryman Shoulder Cord
• National Defense Service Medal
• Presidential Unit Citation
• Expert Badge (Rifle, Hand Grenade, Bayonet)
Brad was deeply proud of his service and the honor it brought to his life. Being a veteran was at the core of who he was—and he carried that pride with him every day.
After leaving the military, Brad began a career in construction, where his strong work ethic and natural leadership led him to become a foreman. He loved showing his children the grand homes he helped build around Lake Tahoe, always proud of what he created with his own hands.
Brad was the proud and devoted father of Kristin Withrow (born 1992) and Jacob Withrow (born 1996). He was their hero—their guide through life’s ups and downs. His love for them was visible in every look, every laugh, and every sacrifice. Later in life, he became a loving grandfather to Kiyah, Carter, Raelynn, and Kaci—and he beamed with pride every time he was around his grandbabies.
He was a man of simple joys and deep passions—fishing, flying RC planes, racing RC cars, and playing video games, especially the classics he grew up with: Pac-Man, Galaga, and Space Invaders. Every outing with Brad felt like an adventure—whether camping, exploring Monterey, or casting a line into a quiet lake.
Brad’s legacy isn’t just in the life he lived, but in the lives he touched. He was known for his huge heart, his gentle strength, and the way he made people feel heard and loved. He didn’t speak much about himself—he preferred to listen. He gave all he had, often putting others before himself, even when he had very little to give.
Despite life’s challenges, Brad met them all with courage, humor, and a smile. He didn’t complain. He didn’t ask for much. But he gave everything—to his country, to his work, and to his family.
Brad is survived by his daughter, Kristin Withrow; his son, Jacob Withrow; and his cherished grandchildren, Kiyah, Carter, Raelynn, and Kaci. His spirit lives on through them—in every laugh, every kind gesture, and every moment of bravery.
To us, Bradley Withrow isn’t just a name. He is our foundation. Our teacher. Our protector. Our example. He taught us what it means to be strong, to be loving, and to never give up—no matter the hand life deals you. And though our hearts are heavy, we’ll do just that—carry his memory with us, every step of the way.
