
Red is preceded in death by JoAn Metcalf (spouse of 57 years), infant daughter Tammy Metcalf, brother Ray E. Metcalf and parents Glen and Ersel Metcalf of California.
Red is survived by his sister Nancy Metcalf of Fallbrook, California, Tom & Rhonda Metcalf of Carson City, Nevada; Teresa & Kirk Lyon of Boise, Idaho and grandchildren Brad Metcalf, Lauren & Matthew Stevens, Sarah & Adam Rogers, Sydney Lyon, Morgan Lyon as well as great-grandchildren Elijah Stevens, Payton Stevens, J.T. Rogers and Stevie Rogers.
Red attended Oceanside Community College followed by his service in the United States Navy. He married Betty "JoAn" Metcalf (Lasiter) on December 26,1956, she was certainly his first and only love. Red and JoAn celebrated 50 years of marriage by setting forth on a Panama Canal Cruise.
In 1959 he started his career in construction with Peter Keiwit and Sons. In 1969 he moved the family to Oahu, Hawaii to work with Charles Pankow Builders as a project superintendent. He built high-rises and commercial properties many of which still populate the Honolulu Skyline. His experience was invaluable, and he enjoyed utilizing it to mentor his younger co-workers. His youthful sense of humor and endless joke material helped contribute to a joyful environment on the job and at home.
In 1993, upon retirement from Charles Pankow Builders, he moved the family to Carson City, Nevada where he and his son, Tom, founded Metcalf Builders, Inc. He then retired from Metcalf Builders to pursue his hobbies of golf and bowling. He bowled in local leagues for several years.
A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at Red’s Old 395 Grill in Carson City, NV, from 11:00am-1:00pm.
