Raymond Longré, 95 of Minden, passed away on January 25, 2023. He passed peacefully surrounded by his family at Carson Tahoe Medical Center in Carson City, Nevada. He was a devoted family man – he treasured his wife, children, and grandchildren.
He was born to the late Carlo Longré and Francesca Longré (née Bovero) on June 21, 1927, in Berkeley, California. He spent his childhood years in Berkeley and attended University High school where he earned varsity letters in baseball and track.
Ray served in the United States Marine Corps from 1945-1946 towards the end of the Second World War. He was stationed in China where he had oversight for Prisoners of War. He played baseball for the Marin Corp and traveled to India and Japan to play against opponents such as the US Navy. Upon his return from military service, Ray played professional baseball for the Pittsburgh Pirates farm league but decided to return home after a few seasons to attend trade school.
Raymond married Angela Domingo of Berkeley, California in 1960 and they started their family in the Bay Area before relocating to the Carson Valley in 1972. He is preceded in death by his wife, parents, and sisters (Flora Longré and Ileana (Lillian) Longré). Raymond is survived by his three children: Raymond Longré (Caroline), of Minden; Lori Annett (Allen), of Gardnerville; and Joanne Longré (David), of Berkeley, California; and three grandchildren – Joseph Longré, Madeline Annett and Daniel Longré.
Raymond was a union Sheet Metal Worker for over forty years and during that time worked on some of the most iconic buildings in the San Francisco and South Lake Tahoe areas. He retired from the trades in 1989 and from there kept busy through his interest in ranching, home building, investing in real estate and working on small projects around the house.
Ray coached Babe Ruth baseball for several years and maintained good relationships with many of the young men he coached. His love of baseball remained throughout his life; he was an avid San Francisco Giants fan.
There will be a celebration of Ray’s life at St. Gall’s Catholic Church on Saturday, February 4, 2023, at 11am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Carson Valley Food Closet or the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).
