

Alvie Ross Shoemaker Jr., 85 of Sandy Springs, GA, passed away on April 7, 2017. Mr. Shoemaker was born in Cartersville, GA on March 4, 1932, to Alvie Ross Shoemaker Sr. and Ruth Esther Quasebarth Shoemaker. The oldest child he was very close to his only brother and sibling William Carl. Known as Ross to his family, friends and classmates, he spent his early life in Cartersville and North Georgia. He was an Eagle Scout in Cartersville’s Troop 17 and a Camp Counselor at Camp Sidney Dew, instructing younger Scouts for their Horsemanship and Swimming merit badges among other duties. When his father was injured in a train accident young Ross helped the family financially by taking a job running the projector room at the Grand Theater on evenings and weekends. After graduating from Cartersville High School where he lettered in football and basketball, he enlisted in the United States Navy.
During his 5 years of service to his country, part of which was during the Korean War. He served 2 years on surface ships and 3 years in the very perilous Submarine Service.
In the fall of 1955 after his honorable discharge from the US Navy, Mr. Shoemaker enrolled at Georgia Tech in Atlanta. While attending a dance at the famous Fox Theater in Atlanta he met his future wife Miss Nadine Gordon. Ross and Nadine were married on March 16, 1956 and were together for 61 years of marital devotion.
Mr. Shoemaker earned his Bachelors of Industrial Engineering degree in the summer of 1959 and he put his submarine experience to good use as a Sales Engineer for the Elliot Co., a manufacturer of turbo-machinery, electric motors and generators some of which were used in fleet submarines of the time. Mr. Shoemaker passionately practiced his engineering profession, becoming a Registered Professional Engineer in the states of Georgia, Florida, Alabama and other states. In 1980 he founded Shoemaker & Associates, Inc. a Construction and Consulting firm specializing in Commercial Refrigeration projects, operating it for over thirty years.
Mr. Shoemaker is preceded in death by his parents Alvie Ross Shoemaker Sr. and Ruth Esther Quasebarth Shoemaker, son, Michael Eric Shoemaker and brother, William Carl Shoemaker.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Nadine Gordon Shoemaker, sons: Alvie Ross Shoemaker III of Pensacola, FL, and David Carl Shoemaker and daughter-in-law, Mary Evelyn Shoemaker of Columbus, GA. Grandchildren: Lauren Elizabeth Shoemaker of Tuscaloosa AL, Gavin Ross Shoemaker of Pensacola, FL., Step Grandson, Slayton Whatley of Columbus, and great grandchild Edith Grace Shoemaker-Snider of Tuscaloosa AL.
A graveside service will be held for Mr. Shoemaker at 11:30 in the morning, Saturday April 15, 2017 at Oak Hill Cemetery in Cartersville, GA. officiated by Rev. Josh James.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 in the morning Saturday, April 15, 2017 until the funeral hour at
