

Betty was a 1960 graduate from Cass High School, graduated from Reinhardt University (with honors) in 1978, from Brenau University (with honors) 1980, and Berry College in 1987 with Advanced Degrees (with honors).
Betty began her educational teaching career in 1970 at Cloverleaf School and transitioned to the New (then) Cartersville Elementary/Middle School in 1975 where she remained until her retirement in 2006. As a middle school 7th and 8th grade English teacher, she enjoyed the tour of Georgia (teachers and students) traveling the state and being a part of the Georgia Daughters of the American Revolution (D. A. R.) chapter and a longtime member of Delta Kappa Gamma Honor Society. In 1997 she received Cartersville’s Teacher of Year Award.
Betty was a world traveler, adventurer, and enjoyed the east coast trips to Maine, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket Island with the Neal and McDonald families. She was adamant of feeding her deer, cardinals, and hummingbirds and tending her botanical garden flowers.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 56 years, Colonel Steve Black; grandson, Garrett Steven Black; sister, Fae Cline and brother, J. Wayne Cline.
She is survived by her sons, Jeffrey Kenneth Black and his wife Lori Mills Black and Eric Steven Black, Sr. and his wife Kimberly Sanford Black; her beloved grandsons, Eric Steven Black Jr., Trent Black and his wife Arriana, and Davis Jeffery Black; great grandsons, Atlas and Kaius; step-grandchildren, Brittany Phinazee and Cody Bradshaw; step-great grandchildren, Ryder, Talyn, Easton and Grayson; as well as nieces, and great-nieces and nephews.
Betty affectionately known by her grandchildren, other family, and friends as “Bet Bet” was a constant bright light to everyone she knew. She was a serious and dynamic teacher that influenced many students to continue their education.
Betty will be truly missed. Her inspiration, love, and legacy will long be reflected upon with thankfulness, that we, her family and friends, knew, and loved her beyond mortal words.
A memorial gathering of friends and family will be held on Thursday, September 10, 2026, from 5-8 pm at Owen Funeral Home. She will be laid to rest at a later date with her beloved husband at Center Baptist Church Cemetery.
