Betty Jeanine (BJ) Mathis Cochran, of Cartersville, died suddenly at home of natural causes on Sunday June 3, 2012. She is the wife of the late John Cochran, retired pharmacist, owner of Cochran Pharmacy, whom she was married to for almost sixty years and missed so much. She was born October 9, 1929 in Cedartown, Polk County, GA. She was the daughter of the late James W. Mathis and Margaret Willis Mathis. She was preceded in death by one brother, James W. (Matt) Mathis Jr.
BJ attended Agnes Scott College for Women and graduated from the University of Georgia in 1950 with a degree in Business Services. She lived in Cartersville and taught Business Services at Cartersville High School until 1953. She became a Mom in 1954 having John Milton (Johnny), in 1956 having James William (Jim) and 1958 having Mary Elizabeth.
Her favorite hobby was loving her husband, children and friends over food and drink. She loved to golf, travel with friends, read and share books, as well as watch plants grow.
BJ was a member of the First Baptist Church and a member of the Cartersville Country Club where she was the club champion numerous times over four decades and was a past member of club’s board. She was a past President of the Cartersville Service League.
BJ is survived by her children, son John and wife Muffy, son Jim and wife Sheila, daughter Mary and husband Barry Parker, special niece Lynne Cochran Vaught and husband Ed, special nephew Steven Brown Cochran and wife Linda, special niece Betsy Mathis Moore and husband Tom and their daughter Megan, together with a host of relatives and friends who will dreadfully miss her embrace, ready smile, kindness, jokes and big laugh.
There will be a visitation and memorial service at Owen Funeral Home on Saturday, June 9, 2012, with the visitation set from 11:00 A.M. till 12 Noon with the memorial service set to start at noon with Rev. Jeff Wright and Herschel Wisebram officiating.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Ga. Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 1365 Peachtree St. NE, Suite 135, Atlanta, Ga. 30309.
Owen Funeral Home, 12 Collins Drive, Cartersville, Ga. is in charge of the arrangements.
