Charles was born on December 19, 1943, and was a lifelong resident of Bartow County. He spent the majority of his professional life as a public servant, serving as chief of police for the Cartersville Police Department and as a deputy for the Bartow County Sheriff’s Department.
But above all, he was a fiercely devoted father, friend, avid lover of dogs, and a faithful servant of God. He also proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. He possessed a quiet strength, a generous heart, and a resilience that carried him through life’s challenges. His dry wit and sense of humor brought joy to those around him, and he never tired of watching Robert Duvall’s portrayal of Augustus McCrae in Lonesome Dove-even for the 100th time.
He is survived by his daughter, Amanda Lanham, and grandson, Xavier Dziengeleski. He was predeceased by his parents Henry and Mary; sisters Patricia and Sharlene; and son, Casey.
A service with military honors will be held at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia on June 29th at 9:30 AM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made in Charles’s name to Recovery Bartow, https://www.recoverybartow.org/ which provides services to individuals and families affected by substance use disorders.
